Life in Cedar Park’s Buttercup Creek, a suburb of Austin

A family-friendly Cedar Park community, Buttercup Creek provides residents with both suburban amenities and commuter conveniences. “The toll road, Highway 183, is being extended from Austin to Cedar Park, so that tells you that commuters are definitely using these roads to get in and out of the city,” says Evie Ellis, Broker with ATX Home Realty. “Development is taking off big time out here.” Not only does Highway 183 allow for a 20-mile ride into Downtown Austin, but it’s also lined with shopping centers and a variety of restaurants. Several pocket parks are scattered throughout Buttercup Creek, which is bookended by the four-laned Lakeline Boulevard and Bell Boulevard. In addition to green spaces, the highly rated Leander school district serves the community. “People will move here because it’s more suburban with better schools that have better programs and more to offer,” Ellis says.

Buttercup Creek parks, summer concerts and farmers markets

Buttercup Creek Cave Preserve, located just west of the neighborhood, provides miles of dirt walking trails through the forest, following different cave openings that are marked with educational plaques. There’s no parking in the area, but residents can enter the trail through several access points, one being from the Maurice Drive cul-de-sac. The neighborhood has multiple pocket parks with playgrounds, including Kay Redden Park, Prize Oaks Park and Janet Bartles Park. In addition to a playground, Buttercup Creek Park also features an outdoor pool with a slide. A daily pass to the pool, which is open to the public, is free for children younger than 3 and $3 for adults.

Just south of Buttercup Creek, Lakeline Park draws a crowd on Fridays to its free summer concert series. “They get bands like Suede, which has a huge following, and food trucks,” Ellis says. The park also has a playground, athletic facilities and a kayak launch into the reservoir. Nearby on Bell Boulevard, the name of US Route 183 through this part of Cedar Creek, the Texas Farmers Market is open on Saturdays year-round. Recently under new ownership, the farmers market is now more centralized in Cedar Park and the first of more retail to come to the development. Next door, the Cedar Park Public Library expanded in 2001 to its current 25,500-square-foot building, complete with both indoor and outdoor children’s play areas.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
