Suburbia in northeast Cedar Rapids
Founded in the wake of World War II, Noelridge Park originally served as a community for soldiers returning home from the theatres of war to begin a new life. The goal was to raise families in a secure environment bedecked with middle-class creature comforts. That original goal of an affordable, suburban retreat is one that this community still clings to, with convenient access to some of Cedar Rapids' largest employers, along with shopping corridors, reputable schools and community-led events. Named for the 100-acre park at the neighborhood's center, Noelridge Park is prized by locals for its quiet sense of security and natural beauty.

Classic and modern ranch-style homes
The streets in Noelridge Park stretch out, creating pockets of residential zones that cluster around critical areas like the shopping centers or the Park itself. Sidewalks aren't universal, but driveways seem to be, cutting down on street parking. Homes generally have full-sized back and front yards, many accented with mature oak and pine trees, adding a sense of natural depth to the landscape. "The neighborhood grew up right after the war effort in the 1940s, so a lot of these homes are typical mid-century styles," says Jason Vestweber, a Realtor with Skogman Realty who has served the area for over 14 years. "But there's lots of new development, along with multi-family units and open tracts of land. It's a very mixed area." As a result, ranch-style homes make up the lion's share of architectural styles, though some streets also have examples of Cape Cod and split-level houses. Prices begin in the low $100,000s for smaller mid-century models and rise into the low $200,000s for fully renovated ranch-style homes. Newer construction generally falls between the high $300,000s and low $400,000s.

Local produce at the farmers market
The local community is fond of coming up with excuses to eat, drink and be merry with its neighbors, a tradition that some say is part of the state's heritage. "Iowa is the state of weekend festivals," says Vestweber. "There's never a weekend in the summer when we or one of the surrounding areas isn't having a celebration of some kind." Noelridge Park hosts a weekly farmer's market during the warmer months. Small and low-key, the event provides residents with the opportunity to buy locally grown produce, as well as rub elbows with their friends and family.
