Noelridge Park
Suburban Neighborhood in Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Linn County 52402
Classic and modern ranch-style homes
The streets in Noelridge Park stretch out, creating pockets of residential zones that cluster around critical areas like the shopping centers or the Park itself. Sidewalks aren't universal, but driveways seem to be, cutting down on street parking. Homes generally have full-sized back and front yards, many accented with mature oak and pine trees, adding a sense of natural depth to the landscape. "The neighborhood grew up right after the war effort in the 1940s, so a lot of these homes are typical mid-century styles," says Jason Vestweber, a Realtor with Skogman Realty who has served the area for over 14 years. "But there's lots of new development, along with multi-family units and open tracts of land. It's a very mixed area." As a result, ranch-style homes make up the lion's share of architectural styles, though some streets also have examples of Cape Cod and split-level houses. Prices begin in the low $100,000s for smaller mid-century models and rise into the low $200,000s for fully renovated ranch-style homes. Newer construction generally falls between the high $300,000s and low $400,000s.Splash around at the Noelridge Aquatic Center
With 103 acres of land that include playgrounds, greenhouses, an aquatic center and more, Noelridge Park is a popular spot for recreation in its eponymous neighborhood. A paved trail cuts through the area's greenery, offering a view of the Park's flower gardens and fishing pond. Just southeast of the Park is the Noelridge Aquatic Center, which provides a family-friendly way to cool off during the summer with a water slide, sand play area and lots of shaded spaces and umbrellas. Golf fans can visit the Elmcrest Country Club on the eastern border in neighboring Kenwood Park. Membership includes access to a pool, tennis courts and the club's 18-hole, par 70 golf course with driving range and chipping greens. One of the best college preps in Iowa
Students can begin their education at Wright Elementary School, which has a C-plus on Niche and serves a diverse community, with 17 languages spoken between less than 300 students. From there, they can attend B-minus-rated Harding Middle School, which offers computer science, wellness and visual arts programs in addition to standard curriculum. Older students can enroll in Kennedy High School, which scores an A-minus and is ranked as one of the top 10 best college prep public schools in Iowa by Niche. Those seeking a private school education can apply to Isaac Newton Christian Academy, which has a B-minus and offers non-denominational Christian education to grades pre-K – 12. Iowa's open enrollment policy allows parents to choose any public school they see fit for their children, regardless of their district.Local produce at the farmers market
The local community is fond of coming up with excuses to eat, drink and be merry with its neighbors, a tradition that some say is part of the state's heritage. "Iowa is the state of weekend festivals," says Vestweber. "There's never a weekend in the summer when we or one of the surrounding areas isn't having a celebration of some kind." Noelridge Park hosts a weekly farmer's market during the warmer months. Small and low-key, the event provides residents with the opportunity to buy locally grown produce, as well as rub elbows with their friends and family. Radio station KCCK hosts Jazz Under the Stars, an annual series of free, family-friendly concerts throughout August.A straight shot to Mercy Hiawatha
The neighborhood is bordered on the north by Iowa Highway 100, which leads to Interstate 380. This provides a straightforward route into downtown Cedar Rapids, some 4 miles south, and the Mercy Hiawatha Medical Park, less than 3 miles northwest. Cedar Rapids Transit offers a bus line that routes throughout the city at $1 a ride.Get a dipped cone at Kool Moo
The Kool Moo has been serving ice cream in the neighborhood since 1973. With a rotating list of soft-serve flavors and hours that go until long after sundown, the Cedar Rapids favorite can amass quite a crowd, especially during the hottest days of summer. With 108 beers on tap and a menu that includes everything from nachos to lobster cakes, The Pedalers Fork has a classic tavern atmosphere with live events and outdoor seating. Popular food franchises include KFC and the Olive Garden, with Hy-Vee Grocery Store at the community's southern tip and the Lindale Mall 2 miles east.
Important to know
Cedar Rapids has a history of flooding, including the 2008 flood, which left over 10,000 people displaced and nearly 8,000 pieces of property damaged or destroyed. The city has responded with an interim flood management system that includes barriers, dam operators and several safety precautions as it develops and funds a permanent solution.
