Student housing mixed with restaurants along Green Street
Located in the space between downtown Champaign and Urbana, Campustown is home to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign’s student body. “The quad actually splits between Champaign and Urbana, so part of the campus is in Champaign and the other part is in Urbana,” says Kate Hoveln, who works as broker Steve Littlefield’s assistant at Keller Williams Realty The Real Estate Center. “The downtown area is mainly students.” Students are close enough to campus that they can walk to their classes and events while still living on an urban campus with other amenities. Along with the academic buildings and sorority and fraternity houses occupying the area, Green Street is a hub for activity with its string of restaurants. While the area attracts students for its proximity to campus, they can stay for Campustown’s activities and liveliness.

Green Street's eats: from modern sushi to casual diner fare
All along Green Street, restaurants offer an eclectic mix for students to choose from. Sakanaya has a sleek, minimalist interior and a menu lined with comprehensive sushi options, including plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. For Indian, people head to Naya Indian Cuisine, where the wood features and colored bottles behind the bar create a warm atmosphere. While not along Green Street, Merry-Ann’s Diner is a staple amongst students because it's open 24/7. Whether up late studying or partying with friends, students in search of a late-night snack can sit in the old-fashioned red vinyl booths and order classic American breakfast and dinner foods. For groceries, County Market is just 0.4 miles from Campustown along Springfield Avenue. Both Harvest Market and Schnucks Urbana are within 2 miles.

Free university museums explore art, human culture
Just south of Green Street, students can gather on the Main Quad between classes, and many bring picnic blankets and sit with friends when the weather is nice. Washington Park is a strip of green between apartment complexes and fraternity houses, offering basketball and volleyball courts. The university’s campus also offers two museums that are open for free to the public. Spurlock Museum of World Culture features over 50,000 artifacts throughout its nine permanent exhibits and has been maintained by the university since 1911. Lovers of the arts can take a stroll through Krannert Art Museum’s halls to appreciate the masterpieces there.

Tailgating before the Fighting Illini football games
The university is home to The Fighting Illini, with an active community in Champaign and Urbana that comes together for game days. University of Illinois Memorial Stadium hosts both the football games and tailgates, with the option for people to reserve spots for their tents in the stadium’s Grange Grove section. “Our community is huge into tailgating and that takes place on campus,” Hoveln says. “On game days, you’ll see people downtown in their orange and blue.” While the rest of the community has to drive and find parking, Hoveln says that students can walk to both games and tailgates. Other than games, students and residents can also attend the seasonal Saturday morning farmers market in downtown Urbana—Market at the Square.
Students bus and Uber to downtown Champaign from Campustown
While students can walk along Green Street or to campus from Campustown, downtown Champaign is about 1.3 miles away and isn’t accessible to most by foot. “Most students Uber downtown,” Hoveln says. However, those who don’t want to pay can take the bus powered by Mass Transit District (MTD), where university students can ride for free. There’s even a separate app for students to distinguish their passes from the general public’s. Students traveling out of the city for breaks and between semesters can choose between the Amtrak, just 1 mile away, or Willard Airport, 6.5 miles. This airport is regional but offers daily flights to Chicago O’Hare and Dallas-Fort Worth International Airports. Carle Hospital Urbana is the closest medical facility, about 1.5 miles away.

High-rise apartment buildings and room rentals
Because Campustown is almost entirely occupied by students, most properties here are rentals in older homes and new high-rise apartments with underground parking garages. “Some of the houses are owned by landlords and rented out by college students,” Hoveln says. “There’s quite a bit of sorority and fraternity life on the campus as well.” Greek organization homes are often large brick Colonial and Tudor Revivals, boasting large Greek letters and enough space to house several students. Rentals often have signs on the facades listing the management group renting out the buildings. These homes are often Nationals and brick American Foursquares with decks and unique window features like dormer and bay windows. Sidewalks and trees line the streets, adding shade on sunny days while students make their way to class.
