North Champaign's neighborhood parks and community vegetable gardens
In the southeastern corner of Garden Park sits Hazel Park. While this neighborhood is open to Champaign-Urbana’s public, it mostly functions as a neighborhood park because its within walking distance of Garden Park’s homes and has minimal parking. The park is mainly open fields, with a soccer goal on one, but it also has a basketball court and playground for kids. Just a bit south is Spaulding Park, with more athletic facilities like a baseball diamond that hosts local leagues and tennis courts. Skaters can drop into the concrete bowl at the skatepark here. Randolph Street Community Garden is a local garden open to north Champaign residents, encouraging people to grow their own produce.

Downtown Champaign's barbeque and American restaurants
Because Garden Park is entirely residential, downtown Champaign’s dining scene supplies the community with several options for a night out. “Downtown Champaign is more your local restaurants, and they have a lot of live music in the street,” says Kate Hoveln, an assistant at Keller William Realty The Real Estate Center. “It’s definitely a hopping place on a Friday and Saturday night.” Black Dog Smoke and Ale House serves classic barbeque and southern favorites like catfish. Seven Saints is a local favorite, serving American fare like burgers. “It’s right by the train station and across the street are a bunch of bars,” Hoveln says. “Oftentimes, people will eat at Seven and then hop over to the bars for a couple of drinks there.” For grocery shopping, residents head in the other direction to the other side of I-74. Over here, there’s a Meijer, Target, Aldi and Walmart Supercenter, all within 2 miles off Prospect Avenue.

University of Illinois football games and Urbana's farmers market
A large part of Champaign-Urbana’s culture is the football and basketball games at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. On game days, it's common to see the community decked out in orange and blue, showing their pride for the Fighting Illini as they make their way to games, including locals from communities like Garden Park. “Depending on where you’re at, people will park a little away from the stadium and walk to the games,” Hoveln says. “People have parking passes to the different lots.” In the summer, Urbana hosts Market at the Square every Saturday morning. Hoveln says that local farmers from the farming communities surrounding Champaign-Urbana supply these, and locals come for the fresh produce, artisan goods and craft items. Once a month from May to August, people gather in Hessel Park for live music and food vendors.
Garden Park residents can attend Market at the Square on Saturdays during the summer.
