Residential-commercial neighborhood just outside UNC-Chapel Hill campus
Glen Lennox, a neighborhood more than 50 years old at the intersection of Route 54 and Highway 501, has a history of preservation and reinvention. About 2 miles from the UNC-Chapel Hill campus, the heavily wooded community has historically been a desirable place where families, retirees and UNC students lived. “It used to be student housing, and it’s now undergoing a huge redevelopment,” says Jay Kennihan, a longtime Chapel Hill resident and owner of Chapel Hill Realty Group. The Save Glen Lennox campaign preserved the spirit of the original neighborhood as new additions were built. Today, Glen Lennox has more of a mixed-use purpose with the presence of the four-story office building called the Gwendolyn, which takes its name from Gwendolyn Harrison, the first African-American woman to attend UNC-Chapel Hill. It’s one of the few new office buildings in the city. The Gwendolyn, the Glen Lennox Shopping Center and apartment complexes are clustered along Highway 501. The rest of the neighborhood is primarily single-story homes on long, straight streets.

Single-family homes and new apartments
Oak and magnolia trees shade the residential streets and sidewalks. Single-story cottages and homes with traditional architecture were built throughout the 20th century. Prices range from about $535,000 to $770,000. Units are available for rent in the new, luxurious Link Apartment buildings and the 1950s brick dwellings on grassy lawns. Once the final plans for the Link Apartments had been approved, developers gave residents a year's advance notice as to the demolition of nearly 450 original single-story brick apartments. The ongoing construction is nearing completion. “The area has been enhanced with the new construction; old timers may disagree,” Kennihan says. “There was a big hullabaloo. The building company withdrew their initial plans and did some town halls to reassure existing tenants.” And while there might be some lingering bitterness for the changing streetscape, Kennihan says that despite the commercial presence, “it’s still a quaint little sliver of Chapel Hill. It's ‘affordable’ living, but our town’s super expensive.”
The majority of homes in Glen Lennox are situated on heavily wooded lots.

In addition to the golfing facilities, club members can access the outdoor pool and a plethora of pickleball and tennis courts.
