Mount Carmel offers privacy and nature without sacrificing convenience

The Mount Carmel community is a quiet part of southwest Chapel Hill, where homes are surrounded by dense patches of tall trees. Despite the country atmosphere, the community is in University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill’s backyard, so commuting to campus is easy. Residents are also a short drive from Governors Village and Carolina Meadows, growing areas with popular restaurants, and Jordan Lake is also nearby. Mount Carmel offers privacy, while also having direct access to Chapel Hill jobs and Jordan Lake recreation.

A country setting with townhouses and million-dollar homes

The area has a country feeling, even though downtown is minutes away. “There's a lot of privacy, a lot of woods,” says Michael Hugelmeyer, a broker with Keller Williams Elite Realty who sells throughout Chapel Hill. “It’s hilly, and most definitely, depending on where you are, is another beautiful location." Hugelmeyer notes the area's access to Jordan Lake, Governors Village and Governors Club. "These are some of the higher-end parts of southern Chapel Hill,” he says.

Ranch-style properties can sell in the mid-$400,000s to upper $500,000s, while grand Colonial Revivals and contemporary builds range from the mid-$900,000s to around $3 million. Townhouses in the Sycamore Run community have sold in the upper $200,000s. Some subdivisions do not charge HOA fees, while others like Hundred Oaks charge around $70 a month. South Creek, a new multiuse complex, will have condos, apartments, townhouses and commercial spaces.

Mount Carmel is close to U.S. Routes 15 and 501, which leads to Pittsboro. Hugelmeyer predicts growth could be centered there. “That whole area will be developed ... so you’re kind of right off that corridor, which is going to be more and more of an important and populated area."

Living close to some of Chapel Hill's best schools and UNC

Mount Carmel is a part of the highly rated Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School District, which is the leading district in the state. Elementary and middle school zones vary, but most students attend Carrboro High School, also highly rated. Schools across the district offer career and technical education courses, and Carrboro High allows students to apply for the Academy of International Studies, which includes courses on global issues. UNC is one of the top public colleges in the state, and it was one of the first public universities in the nation. Students usually attend to pursue degrees in biology or business.

Discover how easy it is to commute from Mount Carmel

Many residents drive into Chapel Hill for education or health care jobs. Driving to downtown takes around 10 minutes, and it takes even less time to reach UNC. Mount Carmel Church Road cuts through the area and is the main route drivers use. “It’s really a back way a lot of people take to get into Apex and Cary,” Hugelmeyer says. “It’s a kind of a superhighway through the back way, so to speak, to get to other areas in the Triangle. Apex and Cary ... there are a lot of stores and a lot going on in that area.” The Triangle is the nickname for the greater area, which comprises Chapel Hill, Durham and Raleigh . Durham has Duke University and more health care jobs. The Research Triangle Park near Durham is home to major employers and is a common commuting destination.

Where you can go to relax outdoors

Mount Carmel residents are surrounded by ways to get outdoors. You can go to nearby 1870 Farm, which offers summer camps, after-school programs and open-house farm visits. The farm also hosts events, like kids vet club and overnight camps. When people want to walk around, they visit the:

  • Merritt’s Pasture park, known for its long walking paths.
  • Parker Preserve, where hiking trails cross through a forested area.
  • North Carolina Botanical Garden, which has trails and a learning center.
  • Mason Farm Biological Reserve, which you can reach by hiking through Parker Preserve.
You can also take a quick trip south for a day on the water. “People love Jordan Lake as far as recreation goes,” Hugelmeyer says. The lake is surrounded with things to do, from fishing spots and hiking trails to swimming areas and boat launches.

Quick drives to restaurants and stores

Because Mount Carmel is residential, you have to take a brief drive to go shopping or to dine out. Hugelmeyer highlights Tarantini Italian Restaurant in Governors Village, which is open for lunch and dinner. Flair Fusion Restaurant next door serves brunch, lunch and dinner. Downtown has a range of restaurant options, from the Buns hamburger spot to Mediterranean Deli, Bakery, and Catering. The nearest grocery store is the Weaver Street Market in the nearby Southern Village, though some people might take the 10-minute drive up to the Harris Teeter in Carrboro.
