Dupont Station, part of DuWap, is close to the mall and greenway
The Dupont Station area, intersected by Wappoo Road, is in Dupont-Wappoo, also known as "DuWap." It's considered a part of West Ashley , a large suburban section of Charleston west of the peninsula. The Stono River is to the south of Dupont Station, and the Ashley River is to the east. Though the neighborhood is primarily residential, with greenway access and it is in proximity to the Citadel Mall, one of the largest shopping centers in South Carolina.
Plans for revitalization and mixed-use development over a decade
The area has seen improvements under the Dupont Wappoo Planning Area revitalization projects. Upgrades include a greenway-bikeway connection, outdoor beautification and zoning changes to encourage mixed-use development. A significant undertaking is the expansion of the Citadel Mall into the Citadel Mall Epic Center. The plan calls for a pedestrian-friendly town center with added retail, dining, events, outdoor spaces and residential components. Construction, starting in 2025, is anticipated to take several years. Cheryll Woods-Flowers, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty, says, despite Charleston experiencing a lot of growth, it's still a friendly place for people moving from out of town. "Somebody can move in and feel comfortable, make friends quickly and be accepted."
20th-century ranch-style homes, townhomes and newer construction
Sidewalks aren't standard in residential areas, but short streets and the lack of a grid pattern curb traffic and speeding. Many of the homes in Dupont Station are 1950s to '80s ranch-style homes. Later additions, into the 2020s, include contemporaries and traditionals. Some properties have lots of half an acre or more. Single-family home prices often range from about $360,000 to $850,000, though there are some for over $1 million. Townhomes, such as those in the gated Wildwood subdivision, typically date to the 1970s and are about $250,000 to $300,000.
Stores and eateries on the Savannah Highway, at the mall and downtown
U.S. Route 17, known as the Savannah Highway, serves as a commercial corridor. Independently owned restaurants include The Early Bird Diner, which has been featured on the show "Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives." Chef Loong Dim Sum & Soup Dumplings offers Cantonese favorites and Boxcar Betty's is known for fried chicken sandwiches. "There's pretty much anything anyone could want. Of course, we have fast food like everywhere else," Woods-Flowers says. Citadel Mall, which already has more than 100 stores before future expansion, is a couple of miles north of Dupont Station. A Piggly Wiggly supermarket is in the Quadrangle Shopping Center, to the west near the highway's junction with Interstate 526. To the east, there's a Whole Foods Market, and to the north, Westwood Plaza Shopping Center offers a Harris Teeter and national-brand stores. Downtown, about 5 miles away, is known for boutiques, high-end shopping and restaurants.
Community parks, a greenway with trails and a nearby food forest
West Ashley Greenway, a mixed-surface trail about 8 miles long, is also integrated with the West Ashley Bikeway, which stretches about 3 miles. In addition, the Ashley River Crossing, a pedestrian and bicyclist bridge, is in the works. The plans call for it to connect the greenway to downtown, making a trip to the peninsula more walkable and bikeable. It's expected to be completed in 2027. Randolph Park, which benefited from the city's Playground Replacement Program, has climbing structures, swings and slides. The West Ashley Farmers Market is held seasonally at Ackerman Park, which is a couple of miles away. Ackerman also has a dog park and a skate park. Less than a mile north of Dupont Station is the Mulberry Park Food Forest, the first of its kind in the state.
Well-regarded public schools in the Charleston County School District
Much of the area is zoned to Stono Park Elementary School, which earns a B-minus grade from Niche. The B-rated C. E. Williams Middle School for Creative and Scientific Arts is a zoned magnet with two campuses, one for sixth grade, the other for seventh and eighth. West Ashley High School, which receives a B-plus, has 5A athletics teams with high rankings within the South Carolina High School League. The Charleston County School District offers open enrollment for magnet and charter schools or other transfers. Additionally, the Charleston area has a variety of private schools.
Highways, buses and bridges connect parts of Charleston
To the east, the Savannah Highway becomes the Ashley River Memorial Bridge, crossing over to the peninsula. Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) bus stops are found at multiple points along the highway.
Moderate coastal flood risk and very high hurricane risk
According to FEMA, the Dupont Station area has a relatively moderate risk for coastal flooding and a very high risk for hurricanes. Though the risk of riverine flooding is relatively low, properties closest to the Stono River could be more vulnerable. The Dupont-Wappoo Watershed Master Plan, launched in 2016, addressed some conditions related to drainage, streams and wetlands.
