Grand Oaks has sought-after subdivisions in suburban West Ashley
Grand Oaks is a residential area in suburban West Ashley , featuring sought-after subdivisions with a mix of homes from the early 2000s and later. "It's fairly small, but it does have nice housing, different types of housing …. and there's a nice recreation complex," says Julie Nims, a Realtor with Red Door Property Group. Downtown Charleston is approximately 12 miles away, on the peninsula to the east.
A mix of styles for single-family homes, townhouses and condos
Options include contemporaries, modern farmhouses and ranch-style homes. Some feature Charleston-style second-story porches, often called piazzas. The newest construction—homes built in the 2020s—is concentrated west of Proximity Drive. Single-family homes range from approximately $400,000 to $680,000, while condos and townhouses typically cost between $290,000 and $490,000. Subdivisions, including Grand Oaks Plantation and Moss Creek, offer a mix of home types and amenities, which may include pools, clubhouses and walking trails. Apartment complexes bring plenty of renters to Grand Oaks. Streets in Grand Oaks may be curved, short or have full or half-cul-de-sacs. Sidewalks are common, and golf carts have become increasingly popular in some communities.
Recreation center activities and a nearby country club for golf
The Bees Landing Recreation Center (BLRC) has a playground, a dog park, basketball courts, a gym and ball fields. "It's public, there's a park and a tennis center. There's a lot going on neighborhood-wise with recreation," Nims says. Programming at BLRC includes senior activities, gymnastics, art classes and Kids Night Out, which includes activities and a movie. The Arthur B. Schirmer Jr. Tennis Center also has pickleball courts. Within a couple of miles, Shadowmoss Golf & Country Club has an 18-hole course and bookable tee times. About 3 miles to the southeast, West Ashley Park has a playground, athletics fields and courts and a pavilion.
Events hosted by HOAs and a historic plantation located nearby
Subdivisions and homeowners associations host events. In Moss Creek, for example, the HOA has hosted movie nights at the community park, poolside cookouts and holiday-themed celebrations. Also close to Grand Oaks, to the north along state Route 61/Ashley River Road, is the area Nims calls "Plantation Row," though that's not an official name. "The big plantations, the historic ones, are very popular for tourists and locals. Schools go to them on field trips. Each one has its own character …. they're all just boom, boom, boom—one after another on 61." Magnolia Plantation & Gardens, about 5 miles from Grand Oaks, dates to 1679 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Events at Magnolia include story strolls, craft workshops, Christmas-season candlelight concerts and the three-day Juneteenth Celebration, which incorporated educational programming related to the history of enslaved people and their emancipation.
A shopping center close to home and a large mall within 5 miles
West Ashley Circle Center, off Grand Oaks Boulevard and Bees Ferry Road, includes a Harris Teeter and chain restaurants Eggs Up Grill and Shuckin' Shack Oyster Bar. Asian Grill is known for hibachi, Thai food and pho. Also nearby is a Walmart, and to the south is U.S. Route 17/Savannah Highway, a commercial corridor. Citadel Mall, about 5 miles away, has more than 100 businesses, including a movie theater, Citadel Stadium 16. Plans call for the mall to be transformed over several years into a mixed-use retail hub to be named Citadel Mall Epic Center.
Charleston County District schools rated B and higher by Niche
Kids may enroll in Charleston County School District schools, including Drayton Hall Elementary School, which earns an A grade from Niche. A zoned magnet with a B rating is C. E. Williams Middle School for Creative and Scientific Arts. Sixth graders attend the middle school's north campus, while seventh and eighth graders are assigned to the south campus. West Ashley High School has a B-plus rating and strong athletics programs, with 5A teams ranking well in the South Carolina High School League. Open enrollment is also an option; the district has magnet and charter schools.
Fairly car dependent, with highways and a hospital nearby
Driving is the primary form of transportation. Main roads include Bees Ferry Road and Glenn McConnell Parkway. Within roughly 4 miles of homes in Grand Oaks, there's access to Interstate 526, SR-61 and U.S.-17. From U.S. 17, it's about 23 miles south on Main Road to reach the coast, where one of the closest beaches is at Kiawah Beachwalker Park. "It's actually very, very nice. It's probably one of the nicest public beaches in the area," Nims says. The Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) has a bus route that extends as far as Bees Ferry Road, on the periphery of Grand Oaks. Nims says proximity to a major hospital is a benefit of living in West Ashley. Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital is about 5 miles from Grand Oaks.
