Experience the convenience Ballantyne has to offer

Ballantyne is a Charlotte neighborhood that’s full of residential and commercial areas. There are large homes in the popular Ballantyne Country Club community and some newer apartment buildings steps from many of Ballantyne’s popular restaurants. You can commute into central Charlotte or drive to nearby shopping centers thanks to the Interstate 485 loop. The area has some of the higher home prices in the city, but the access to schools, jobs, growing shopping centers and the interstate strikes a balance with many residents.

The area is home to some of Charlotte’s top schools

The neighborhood is a part of the well-rated Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district, and Ballantyne has multiple schools, like the top-rated Ballantyne Elementary School and the nearby Ardrey Kell High School. Kids can attend public, private and religious schools close to home. The district offers a school choice program for families who want their kids to attend schools outside of their designated zone. The program operates on a lottery system, where families apply, and children are accepted based on available class space.

What kind of restaurants and shops are nearby

The Bowl is Ballantyne’s crown jewel. It’s full of restaurants, Stream Park and the area’s concert venue: The Amp. The area continues to grow with new restaurants. “The bowl is changing all the time,” McGregor says. “They have a couple more shops to open. I think it’ll be done soon.” Flower Child’s green exterior matches the restaurant’s menu, which is full of healthy options. You can browse a wide selection of wines at Postino that pair with the available charcuterie boards. There are more casual options, like Harriet’s Hamburgers, Rooster's Wood-fired Kitchen and Fly Kid Fly. Ballantyne Commons East and the Ballantyne Village are also full of restaurants to try. Ballantyne has a Wegmans grocery store, the second-ever location in North Carolina, but there are other grocery options along Johnston Road. While the area is full of restaurants, residents drive a short distance to shop. The Blakeney Town Center is about 3 miles away with shops like Target, Marshalls and Sephora. The Carolina Place mall is closer to 5 miles away.

Ballantyne is a destination for park lovers

Ballantyne is full of outdoor spaces, especially in the northern half of the neighborhood near the corporate parks. Some of the green spaces with room to walk include:

  • Elon Park
  • Stream Park
  • Brixham Park
  • Ballantyne’s Backyard
  • Big Rock Nature Preserve
The Amp neighbors The Bowl, and the venue opened in 2023. There are concerts held in warm months, but The Amp hosts movie nights and an ice-skating rink in the winter. McGregor highlights the McAlpine Creek Greenway, which now extends to Ballantyne. “It’s over in Ballantyne corporate center, by the ESPN building,” McGregor says. “So, you can get on it there and ride it all the way to Trader Joe’s or mostly to Uptown. It’s really cool that they extended that over here. ... I know people who ride it all the way to Uptown to get lunch and then ride it all the way back.”

How to get to Uptown

Most residents drive to get around town and to work in downtown Charlotte, called Uptown. Ballantyne has easy access to Interstate 485. “Ballantyne has a prestigious reputation, and Ballantyne proper is an established area,” McAlister says. “It was secluded before I-485 was built, and now that it’s easier to access with 485, people are willing to pay to be there.” The nearly 20-mile drive to Uptown takes about 30 minutes with light traffic, but Charlotte is known for its heavy traffic delays in the morning and evening. The Charlotte Douglas International Airport is also about 20 miles away. Charlotte Area Transit System buses circle The Bowl and corporate parks and connect to the Lynx Blue Line light rail on Sharon Road.
