From farmland to booming businesses and residential streets

Before Ballantyne was the mixed-use destination it is today, the area was 2,000 acres of farmland owned by Johnny Harris and Smoky Bissell. Smoky bought Johnny’s share of the land, built The Ballantyne Hotel and named the new area Ballantyne. Northwood has taken over the management of the commercial park, and the company continues to expand it with additions like The Bowl, an entertainment and dining district that holds restaurants, luxury hotels and The Amp concert venue. This commercial and residential neighborhood features corporate offices, shopping centers and grand homes. “Ballantyne is technically a pretty small area near Blakeney and Stone Crest,” says Nicole McAlister, a Realtor with over 10 years of experience and who’s licensed in North and South Carolina. “It has a prestigious reputation, and Ballantyne proper is an established area. It was secluded before I-485 was built, and now that it’s easier to access with 485, people are willing to pay to be there.” Some people move down from downtown Charlotte, called Uptown, to find jobs close to bigger homes with large yards and highly rated schools. The access to Interstate 485 also makes it easier to commute the 18 miles into Uptown for work or to explore the city center.

Shopping and dining at The Bowl

Some restaurant owners who got their start in Optimist Hall in NoDa expanded with brand-new locations in The Bowl. Flower Child uses clean ingredients for their lunch and dinner options, and Harietta’s Hamburgers sports a retro design and whips up classic hamburgers guests enjoy outside or at the counter. Portino is a national wine bar that opened its first North Carolina location in The Bowl. Even more restaurants are set to open in 2024, including The Salty Donut and Hawkers Asian Street Food, and Charlotte’s first Wegmans grocery store is coming in 2025. “The area isn't done growing; more is coming,” McAlister says. “There wouldn't be investors interested in the area if it wasn't a growing and desirable place to live.”

Ballantyne has no shortage of stores, as there’s a Publix in Ballantyne Town Center and a Sprouts Farmers Market farther south on Johnston Road. Ballantyne Village has multiple restaurants like Blackfinn Ameripub, which serves brunch, lunch and dinner. Ballantyne Commons East also features restaurants, but the hidden gem is Twigs & Figs, a locally owned plant nursery with wooden shelves full of terrarium equipment, houseplants and guidebooks. The store also hosts private events and daily workshops to help beginner plant owners choose the perfect combination of moss, rocks and succulents for a terrarium.

Mecktoberfest at Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, shows at The Amp

Olde Mecklenburg Brewery opened its second location in The Bowl in June 2024, bringing the Mecktoberfest tradition to Ballantyne. For the first two weekends in October, guests order one-liter glass boots full of lager to pair with pretzels, sausage or schnitzel. Visitors can enjoy live music in the large outdoor seating area, participate in the stein-holding competition to see who can hold their stein the longest, and shout “Prost!” when making a toast in the spirit of Oktoberfest. Directly neighboring The Bowl is The Amp, a concert venue that opened in September 2023. The concert schedule stays full during the spring and summer, and guests relax on the grassy amphitheater seating to watch classic movies during the fall and winter.

New townhouses, spacious single-family homes and luxury estates in Ballantyne

The north half of Ballantyne has townhouses and apartment buildings, some of which are still being built. The south half features condos, townhouses, single-family homes and large estates in the Ballantyne Country Club subdivision. Condos like those in Copper Ridge often range from $225,000 to $370,000. Brand-new townhouses are being built in The Landon subdivision on Johnston Road for $500,000 to $555,000, while existing units throughout the neighborhood can sell for $275,000 to $500,000. Craftsman, Colonial Revival and Cape Cod homes with at least three bedrooms and large yards are common, and they usually sell for $550,000 to $975,000. Homes that cost $975,000 to $2.5 million often have brick exteriors, long paved driveways and expansive yard space. “Ballantyne proper has been seeing record home sales lately,” McAlister says. “Ballantyne Country Club even has a waitlist for memberships.” The Ballantyne Country Club homes are the most expensive with at least 3,000 square feet and four bedrooms. The designs range from Neoclassical, Federal-inspired and luxury new traditional with French or colonial influences. Most have a line of tall trees blocking the backyards from any stray golf balls from the greenways that the homes surround.

Brand-new schools to make room for Ballantyne students

Ballantyne Elementary School gets an A-minus from Niche and is surrounded by detached townhouses. Hawk Ridge Elementary School is closer to Ballantyne Country Club homes and earns an A-minus. Both schools feed into Community House Middle School, which receives an A-minus. Out of the 35 high schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District, Ardrey Kell High School consistently ranks in the top three with an A-plus. The school has over 3,500 students and maintains a graduation rate of 96%. The number of students has caused a strain on both teachers and students, so Mecklenburg County built Ballantyne Ridge High School and Knights View Elementary to decrease the pressure. Both schools opened in August 2024, so Niche has not yet rated them.

I-485 connects the neighborhood to Uptown and beyond

Ballantyne has limited access to CATS buses, as they come by every hour to the stops in the north half of the neighborhood, and they run up to the Lynx Blue Line stop. Driving a car is the primary way to get around town, using Johnston Road when heading to work or merging onto I-485 to get to Uptown. Using the Ballantyne Commons Parkway, Carolina Place mall is 4 miles away in Pineville. SouthPark mall, in the Barclay Downs area of Charlotte, is 8 miles away using Johnston Road. Both can be reached even when avoiding I-485. The interstate also leads 20 miles north to Charlotte Douglas International Airport. Novant has multiple medical centers in Ballantyne, and the Novant Health Ballantyne Medical Center is the most recent addition, with an emergency room, surgical services and routine treatment options. Getting stuck in traffic is a way of life in Charlotte, so some commuters leave early to avoid the peak traffic hours. I-485 is being expanded with new bridges to alleviate traffic in the area. The residential part of Ballantyne has some sidewalks, and the corporate area in the north has plenty of ways to walk or bike from The Amp to The Bowl and from the office buildings to the nearby greenspaces.

Serene greenspaces and the prominent Ballantyne Country Club

Ballantyne’s Backyard is an old golf course converted into a greenspace, where corporate employees leave the nearby office buildings to take a relaxing walk along the paved golf cart paths that now act as walking paths. Cullman Park is another quiet spot near corporate offices where the public can walk around under the shade of tall trees, though it has a pond where anglers are asked to use barbless fishhooks and release their catches back into the water. Behind The Ballantyne luxury hotel, Stream Park features red chairs to relax in near the water feature pond, a walking path that winds up to The Amp, and a children’s play area with slides and a climbing course. Ballantyne Country Club was established in 1996 and is split down the middle by Johnston Road, with the country club pro shop to the west and the family center to the east. There are three different membership types to gain access to the golf course and tennis courts, pool and social events or just the tennis courts. The subdivision has its own Brick Church Park, with playground equipment and a soccer field surrounded by tall trees.

GreatSchools: The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
