A small community with views of the Charlotte skyline
Commonwealth emerged in the early 1900s, when streetcars ran up and down Central Avenue. Today, the neighborhood, located just 3 miles from Uptown Charlotte, is sought-after for its Craftsman homes and walkability. “Commonwealth is on the outskirts of Plaza Midwood, which is a very popular restaurant and entertainment district,” says Jennifer Vick, a Realtor with Compass who has lived and sold houses in the Charlotte area since 2000. Renters, homeowners and temporary military residents affiliated with Charlotte’s U.S. Army Reserve Center make a home in Commonwealth. Next to Veterans Park in the heart of the city, the facility draws soldiers from around the area and other states to complete their monthly reserve duty.

The Plaza-Midwood entertainment district is blocks away
Commonwealth’s walkability is a big draw. The neighborhood is next to the colorful Plaza Midwood, Charlotte’s only social district, where people 21 and up can have open alcoholic drinks as they walk around. “People like it because the goal is to minimize the amount of traffic while people are out and drinking,” says Jennifer Monroe, a Realtor with Compass, who’s lived in Charlotte for 12 years. This bustling stretch of Central Avenue features various shops, bars, restaurants and entertainment venues connected by red brick sidewalks. “Diamond and Common Market are big long-term anchor businesses,” Monroe says. With roots dating back to 1945, Diamond features a large selection of American diner fare, while Common Market, established in 2002, wraps up sandwiches and convenience items to go. Giddy Goat Coffee Roasters is the spot for breakfast burritos and lattes. In the evening, The Rabbit Hole draws in a post-work crowd for happy hours with live music from punk and blues to EDM and hip-hop. Petra’s is also popular for live music, featuring an outdoor stage and a small backroom art gallery. Harris Teeter fulfills everyday grocery needs.

Modern Craftsman builds and Cape Cods on tree-shaded streets
Lofty oak and maple trees form a canopy over the two-lane residential streets of Commonwealth. Single-family homes, built from the 1920s through today, sit close together on lots less than 1/3 acre. Properties feature small front yards framed by sidewalks and short driveways. “Most of the homes are on the smaller side, typically 2,000 square feet or less,” Vick says. However, a few newly constructed houses along Saint George Street are nearly 4,000 square feet. Modern Craftsman, ranch-style homes and Cape Cods are most common, typically featuring brick, stone or shingle accents. Prices range from $400,000 for a single-story bungalow to over $1 million for a two-story build. There are also condo units starting in the $300,000s and newly built townhouses in the $600,000s. Potential buyers should note that Commonwealth homes sell significantly faster than the national average, typically after a week on the market.

Veterans Park offers various ways to stay active
Next to the U.S. Army Reserve Center is Veterans Park. This large central green space features a playground and splash pad. It’s a popular place for exercise, with an outdoor gym, a hilly disc golf course, baseball diamonds, tennis courts and basketball courts. The Little Sugar Creek Greenway is nearby, connecting several area parks with nearly 4 miles of wide, paved path. The private Charlotte Country Club offers the closest golf course. The 18 holes, designed by golf legend Donald Ross, traverse tree-dotted hills and the winding Briar Creek. Untouched nature is found at the 77-acre Evergreen Nature Preserve, where trails meander through a thick forest, offering visitors a place to hear and spot migratory birds.
Families especially enjoy the popular Veteran's Park with multiple play areas and more.

Short drives into Charlotte’s Center City
With U.S. Route 74 to the south and Central Avenue to the north, Commonwealth offers a short 3-mile commute into Uptown Charlotte and quick access to the city’s highway system. “Most people are driving to Uptown for work. We also have some of the hospitals down Pecan Avenue where it changes to Caswell Road,” Monroe says. Charlotte Area Transit System buses loop around the neighborhood, stopping on Central and Commonwealth avenues. Several bike-friendly streets, such as McClintock Road, provide routes for cyclists. I enjoy the atmosphere because the people are friendly and its always something to do in the area. The food is great and different and shopping is great. If I could do it again I would move here that is, wish I had a bigger place, but can't afford to move into a bigger place in this area at a price in my budget. Overall this area makes you feel good coming home, plus its peaceful.
