Affordable living adjacent to hip hotspots
Locals refer to Charlotte's Briarcreek-Woodland area as Commonwealth Park, a primarily residential area adjacent to the trendy and desirable Plaza Midwood. "People who want to be in Plaza Midwood often consider Commonwealth Park because it's right next door," says Kevin Thompson, a Realtor with Helen Adams Realty, who has several years of experience in the area. "It's a little more affordable and not quite as easy to walk to things, but it's got the same charm." Commonwealth Park's streets are quiet but close to the dining and nightlife in Midwood, the arts scene in NoDa and the employment opportunities in Uptown.

Brick ranches and convenient condos
"You'll see a lot of older homes from the 40s, like bungalows and brick ranch styles," Thompson says. "But also, many older properties have been torn down to make way for new development." Midcentury ranch-style homes range from $400,000 to $600,000. Unlike Plaza Midwood, the area has no historic designations, so renovations and new builds are less regulated. Contemporary properties start at $800,000 and reach $1 million when situated on half-acre lots. These old and new properties mesh on quiet streets with tree-covered lawns. Most homes don't have garages, but finding street parking is not a problem here. Briar Creek Road runs directly through town and corners the northwestern quadrant of apartment buildings, condos and commercial areas. There are plenty of rental opportunities; in fact, 75% of neighborhood residents are renters. But for those looking to own more compactly, condos and townhomes range from $300,000 to $400,000.

Activity around Commonwealth Park
Most activity happens 2 miles west, at the retail heart of Plaza Midwood. Mom-and-pop restaurants sit next to hip gastropubs, and streets are lined with colorful murals and eclectic little shops. The thriving nightlife scene includes dive bars and intimate live music venues. Residents can also drive 4 miles north to the arts and entertainment district of NoDa. A bit closer to home, just across Independence Boulevard, the Bojangles Coliseum hosts live music, hockey games and comedy shows. Commonwealth Park residents enjoy access to these lively areas but live far enough away to enjoy peace and quiet at night.

Within the neighborhood, Eastway Shopping Center has a Food Lion and several small eateries, like Portofino's for Italian fare and Mi Tierra for Colombian food. Along Independence Boulevard, Bean Vegan Cuisine has plant-based options, and the old-school South 21 Drive has been serving up classic American fare since 1955. And for those who enjoy that retro feel, Repo Record has an extensive vinyl collection.

Nearby parks and a new Greenway
Though there are few green spaces within Commonwealth Park, locals can walk over to Veterans Park in the west for sports courts and a playground. Kids especially love the seasonal splash pad in the summer. To the east, Evergreen Nature Preserve transports visitors far away from city life with its 77-acre hardwood forest. Commonwealth Park will also get a Greenway to call its own in the coming years. Construction will start in late 2024 on the Briar Creek Greenway extension, which will introduce a 1.5-mile paved multi-use trail connecting Commonwealth Park with Midwood and Chantilly.

Neighborhood kids are zoned for kindergarten through fifth grade at Merry Oaks International Academy. Then it's on to Eastway Middle School and Garinger High School. All three schools receive a C rating from Niche. Garinger High has a unique layout of several small buildings scattered around a 60-acre campus. The neighborhood is located within the Green Zone, which includes various magnet schools that parents can apply to.
