An established neighborhood full of community spirit
Every year, Elizabeth residents celebrate Halloween by creating "The Great Elizabeth Pumpkin Wall," a 60-foot free-standing shelving unit filled with over a hundred pumpkins carved and painted by community members. The tradition began in 2004 and has become a beloved community event. "My favorite thing about Elizabeth is my neighbors, unquestionably," says Debbie Rubenstein, a 20-year resident and the Communications Chair for the Elizabeth Community Association. "We love how neighborly it is and that people work really hard to make it a community." Established in 1891, Elizabeth is a cozy enclave about 2 miles from downtown Charlotte, where mature trees cast shadows over wide streets and busy sidewalks. Along with five pockets of mid-century homes, residents can easily enjoy access to trendy eateries and medical facilities. Independence Park is another defining feature of the neighborhood, as a beloved outdoor space where most community events are held.

Shopping and dining along 7th Street
Elizabeth lodges an array of eateries along every major thoroughfare, though locals largely regard the commercial corridor between 7th Street, Pecan Avenue and Caswell Road as the town center. Here, residents can find eateries serving a range of cuisines from American to Mexican to Japanese. Menya Daruma is among the district's most popular restaurants, serving traditional Japanese ramen. A few doors down is The Crunkleton, a staple in the Charlotte bar scene known for its craft cocktails and curated spirits. Across town, along Central Avenue, residents can find several more eateries, including Moo and Brew, a Charlotte favorite serving elevated burgers and small-batch craft beers. The restaurant, featured on the Food Network's "The Grill Dad's Comfort Food Tour," is widely known for its over-the-top Bloody Mary called the "Large Marge." For daily needs, residents can head to neighboring Cherry, where the Metropolitan shopping mall houses a Target, Trader Joe's and more.

Independence Park is the "heart of the community"
One of Elizabeth's most popular amenities is Independence Park, a 24-acre recreation ground near the town's center. "That park is the heart of the community," Rubenstein says. "It's probably the most used park by neighborhood residents, and it's where they host most of the community's events," she says. Independence Park is split into two sections by Hawthorne Lane, with a lower park featuring winding walking paths, a picturesque rose garden and a small reflecting pool. The upper park is slightly larger and includes amenities for organized activities, like a playground, sports fields and the Hawthorne Recreation Center. It underwent renovations between 2021 and 2023 to make the grounds more accessible and add pickleball courts and permanent restrooms. Another popular outdoor space is Elizabeth Park, a landscaped green space with walking trails that follow Little Sugar Creek.
