A Charlotte community filled with pride

As its surrounding neighborhoods grow in popularity, Lockwood is a neighborhood in flux. Old factory buildings are being transformed into thriving business parks with restaurants and shops like Camp North End. “Lockwood was overlooked for many years, but now it’s very up-and-coming,” says Jennifer Monroe, a broker with Compass who has been selling homes in Charlotte since 2012. “As Camp North End has been blooming up over there, more and more people have been moving there.” More residential than NoDa, the neighboring arts district, homes here sit in a leafy grid surrounded by industrial buildings, businesses and a rail yard. “This neighborhood has a lot of pride; many of the residents have lived here for decades,” says Johnson Bray, a development associate with ATCO working on nearby Camp North End. “It’s rare to get this level of community pride in a big city like Charlotte.”

Lockwood homes rarely go on the market

The historic residential section of the neighborhood is tucked away from busier streets with wide roads, sidewalks and a few blocks of houses. In 2023, a total of 3 homes sold. “There aren’t many properties for sale,” says Brandy Rheinschmidt, a realtor with EXP Realty who has been selling in the area since 2017. "People often don’t leave once they move in.” The community’s quiet roads are lined with bungalows, Charleston-style homes and minimal traditional and new builds. Homes are priced between $280,000 to $802,000, ranging from a 3-bedroom investment property to a 3-bedroom home built in 2020. “Developers are in the process of renovating some of the old industrial buildings in the area into multi-family units,” Bray says.

Major interstates close to the neighborhood

Railroad tracks dominate the landscape of the district's eastern edge. The Amtrak transit station is a half-mile away and accessible via North Tryon Street. However, the station is in need of renovating, as it currently only serves 100 people at a time and will sometimes flood during extreme weather. It is likely that changes to the station will take several years. Major interstates, Interstates 77 and 85, are also accessible within a couple of miles of Lockwood's residential areas. Main thoroughfare Dalton Avenue merges with North Tryon Street in the district's center and runs straight through, connecting Lockwood to more populated parts of the city. Bus lines are run by CATS, the Charlotte Area Transit System, and have stops along both Tryon Street and Graham Street.
