Lockwood
Lockwood homes rarely go on the market
The historic residential section of the neighborhood is tucked away from busier streets with wide roads, sidewalks and a few blocks of houses. In 2023, a total of 3 homes sold. “There aren’t many properties for sale,” says Brandy Rheinschmidt, a realtor with EXP Realty who has been selling in the area since 2017. "People often don’t leave once they move in.” The community’s quiet roads are lined with bungalows, Charleston-style homes and minimal traditional and new builds. Homes are priced between $280,000 to $802,000, ranging from a 3-bedroom investment property to a 3-bedroom home built in 2020. “Developers are in the process of renovating some of the old industrial buildings in the area into multi-family units,” Bray says.Major interstates close to the neighborhood
Railroad tracks dominate the landscape of the district's eastern edge. The Amtrak transit station is a half-mile away and accessible via North Tryon Street. However, the station is in need of renovating, as it currently only serves 100 people at a time and will sometimes flood during extreme weather. It is likely that changes to the station will take several years. Major interstates, Interstates 77 and 85, are also accessible within a couple of miles of Lockwood's residential areas. Main thoroughfare Dalton Avenue merges with North Tryon Street in the district's center and runs straight through, connecting Lockwood to more populated parts of the city. Bus lines are run by CATS, the Charlotte Area Transit System, and have stops along both Tryon Street and Graham Street.Magnet schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District
Highland Renaissance Academy, which serves Preschool to Grade 5, Martin Luther King Jr. Middle and Garinger High School all hold C ratings from Niche. In the 2023 to 2024 school year, 50% of graduating students at Garinger High went to either 2-year or 4-year colleges, while 50% joined the military, workforce or attended a technical school. In 2024, a new coach took over the Garinger High football team in hopes of building and expanding the program to positively impact the community. Students can also apply to attend magnet schools within the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District.Acclaimed eateries in Camp North End
Camp North End features several Lockwood dining favorites. Halal Street Food serves Dominican-Pakistani cuisine with menu items like gyros and shawarma wraps. Wentworth & Fenn is an acclaimed bakery serving made-from-scratch cakes, pastries and more. Just south of the residential area of Lockwood is Petty Thieves Brewing. This craft brewery provides a dim-lit, cozy atmosphere furnished with a mishmash of vintage seating. Petty Thieves often hosts live music and local food trucks to serve customers. Curry Gate, another community favorite, serves Nepalese and Indian staple dishes in a contained, casual dining environment. Wayne’s Super Market is a small, local grocery store on the neighborhood's northern edge.Little Sugar Creek Greenway
While there are no parks directly in the neighborhood, Little Sugar Creek Greenway is just across the railroad tracks, less than two miles to the east. This expanse of trails, parks and gardens hugs the banks of Little Sugar Creek and extends throughout much of the city. It is a popular spot for Queen City residents to bike, walk their furry friends or simply enjoy a leisurely stroll through nature. The greenway connects to both Cordelia Park and Alexander Park. The Lockwood Legends Art Initiative preserving history
The neighborhood association stays connected through meetings, events and cleanups. The Lockwood Legends Art Initiative was established in 2015 when a local nonprofit owner purchased a historical home and launched a community renovation art initiative. The organization hosts events and programming intended to unite the community and preserve Lockwood’s local history and culture.Crime
The neighborhood’s CAP Index crime score is 9 out of 10, significantly above the national average of 4. In 2016, Lockwood won a $25,000 grant from the city of Charlotte to put up 24 new streetlights. As part of the grant terms, community members spent 663 hours volunteering to improve the neighborhood.
