Shamrock
Suburban Neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina
Mecklenburg County 28205
Expansive yards and midcentury homes
“Houses in Shamrock have a pretty sizable range in size and architectural style, which is maybe the biggest attraction to homebuyers other than the proximity to NoDa and Uptown,” says Jennifer Monroe, a broker with Compass who has been selling homes in Charlotte since 2012. Plaza Shamrock’s charming midcentury ranch styles, bungalows and modern builds sprawl out on ample yards that rival those of neighborhoods much further removed from Charlotte’s Center City. For a two- to three-bedroom house built in the 1950s, prices range between $215,000 to $605,000. Larger homes that are new or recently renovated start at $645,000 and go as high as $1.7 million. Most homes have driveways; however, there is occasional on-street parking.Howie Acres Park and mural tours
A few small parks are within 1 mile of the neighborhood, including Howie Acres, North Charlotte, and Clemson Avenue parks. These green spaces feature playgrounds, picnic areas and basketball courts. Spanning 2 acres, Shamrock Park offers a playground, a picnic shelter and courts for tennis and volleyball. Sometimes on the weekends, food trucks are stationed at the park. “You can also go on a mural tour to admire the incredible work painted by local street artists around the area,” Woods says.Garinger High’s historic architecture
Shamrock Gardens Elementary was rebuilt in 2022 and receives a B rating on Niche. Eastway Middle earns a C grade. The historic campus of Garinger High dates to the early 1900s and spreads over 60 acres. The facility contains several buildings, many with interior courtyards and a circular library original to the school’s inception. Garinger has a C rating on Niche. Because the high school is in the neighborhood, residents may hear baseball games from their homes in spring.Community pride with the Plaza Shamrock Neighborhood Association
“There is an active neighborhood community of volunteers that plan neighborhood events,” Woods says. Plaza Shamrock Neighborhood Association members may be seen around the neighborhood sporting green T-shirts from the group’s merchandise line. Boo-fest and Market at Plaza-Shamrock are one of the neighborhood’s biggest events with music, pumpkin decorating and trunk or treating. “It’s just a few miles to Panther's stadium and Optimist Hall and a stone's throw to local vendors and live music in Midwood and North Davidson,” Woods says.Making the neighborhood safer for pedestrians and cyclists
Shamrock is located near several main roads, and the community is a 4-mile commute to Uptown. CATS bus routes encircle the neighborhood. Bike lanes and crosswalks are built into Shamrock’s layout, serving pedestrians and cyclists to promote connectivity between neighboring districts. “You’re within a mile of the light rail; lots of people take that to commute to work in Uptown,” Monroe says. Pedestrians should be cautious around Shamrock Drive as the road is known for speeding cars. However, the Shamrock Drive Complete Street project addresses safety concerns by adding more sidewalks, bike lanes and street crossings.Mattie’s Diner and other local favorites
Billowing hickory trees shad tidy, wide streets that sweep out onto main thoroughfares lined with homegrown shops and restaurants. The Plaza and Shamrock Drive roughly form the neighborhood’s western and southern borders and are home to various neighborhood fixtures. Mattie’s Diner is a beloved institution operating out of a 1940s New Jersey dining car, serving traditional American fare with a southern twist. Letty’s has homestyle southern comfort food on the menu, while Crispy Bahn Mi is a Charlotte chain known for its Vietnamese sandwiches. Shamrock is close to grocers, including Giant Penny Grocery. “NoDa is less than a mile from the neighborhood and has a wide variety of restaurants, breweries, shops and local artisans,” Woods says. “Haberdish, Artisan's Palate, Smelly Cat Coffee and Neighborhood Theater are just a few of the cool spots nearby.” Haberdish hosts weekend brunch, a bar top salvaged from a Virginia quarry and table tops crafted in Charlotte.Crime
The neighborhood’s CAP Index crime score is 7 out of 10, above the national average of 4. Shamrock scores a 9 for burglary and auto theft but a 5 for violent crimes. The city and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department have crime-prevention initiatives, such as the Neighborhood Watch Program and SAFE Charlotte, or Safety and Accountability for Everyone.
