The Palisades
Architectural diversity between separate subdivisions
Like much of southwestern Charlotte, the Palisades has been the subject of rapid expansion in recent years. Grand Palisades Parkway runs throughout the neighborhood, branching into sidewalk-lined streets and tidy rows of new constructions. Each area in the community offers a distinct style, varying between brick Colonial Revivals, farmhouse-style transitional designs and modern Craftsman constructions. Predictably, waterfront properties are among the area’s most valuable and can be priced between $1 million to $2 million. Homes in this high-end area rarely list below $400,000 and climb steadily from there, depending on square footage and waterfront proximity.A full range of activities and amenities at the country club
The Palisades Country Club sits at the center of the community, anchored by a grand, English-style clubhouse. In addition to what MacLeod calls a “relaxed atmosphere” for gatherings and social events, the country club offers 18 holes of golf on a course designed by the legendary Jack Nicklaus. Members also gain access to the club’s large pool area, along with its grass and clay tennis courts. “Tennis is very, very important in the community,” MacLeod says. “They have tennis programs for all different levels, from 5-year-olds to 85-year-olds.” After working up an appetite on the courts or on the greens, folks wind down with a meal at Bear’s Den. The restaurant’s casual yet refined feel makes it a perfect place to sit out on the patio and take in the country club views. Other neighborhood amenities are clustered nearby, including the soccer fields and equestrian center.Summertime means weekend lake days
One of the biggest appeals of living in the Palisades is the miles of shoreline along scenic Lake Wylie. Those who don’t live right on the coast bring their boats, kayaks and canoes up to Copperhead Island directly to the north for a day of fishing or paddling around the calm waters. There’s also McDowell Nature Preserve, a sprawling 1,132-acre expanse that’s popular for its wooded hiking trails with waterfront views.Newly opened Palisades High serves students
Palisades Park Elementary, part of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, is local to the neighborhood and scores B-plus from Niche. Southwest Middle earns a C-plus and sends students on to the brand-new campus at Palisades High, which opened its doors in 2022. Despite its recent establishment, the high school already has more than 35 clubs and organizations, ensuring that students have a variety of ways to get involved. Parents seeking a private alternative can enroll their kids at Palisades Episcopal School, a faith-based school for students in kindergarten through the eighth grade. It receives a perfect A-plus from Niche and serves approximately 200 students.A buzzing retail center at nearby Steele Creek
Residents drive to the shops at Steele Creek Road for everyday shopping and dining, located just outside the neighborhood or roughly 5 miles from the furthest homes. There’s a wide range of big-box shopping, encompassing craft, home improvement and department stores, in addition to grocery staples such as Publix and Target. Fast-food drive-throughs and chain restaurants are convenient picks for to-go meals on the way home, though there’s a fair share of local franchises and small businesses to pick from, too. Masa Sushi is a laid-back haunt for Chinese dishes and specialty Japanese maki rolls, while Luigi’s Pizza is another casual stop-in for New York-style slices. A smattering of multicultural cuisines nearby span countries and continents, from the Mediterranean to East Asia. This large shopping center is also home to the Atrium Health Steele Creek Emergency Department, ensuring that residents are never far from care. Napoli adds, “If you don’t want to go into Charlotte for shopping, you can also go to Lake Wylie, Tega Cay or Fort Mill. You’ve got plenty of options.Drives into Uptown take 30 minutes to an hour
Commuters are about 20 miles from Uptown Charlotte, a drive that can take 30 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic conditions. Charlotte Douglas International Airport is also 17 miles north, a roughly 25- to 40-minute trip. Although this neighborhood isn’t centrally located in the city, residents can easily reach outer Charlotte attractions such as Carowinds or explore charming outskirt towns like Fort Mill.
