Westerly Hills
Suburban Neighborhood in Charlotte, North Carolina
Mecklenburg County 28208

Midcentury constructions mingle with newly renovated properties
This established neighborhood has plenty of mature trees and older homes, with some bungalows dating back to the 1920s. Ranch-style and split-level homes sit atop sloping hillsides and grassy lawns edged by narrow sidewalks. Most of these houses were built between the 1940s and ‘60s and feature carports or detached garages. In more recently developed sections of the neighborhood, New Traditional homes with vinyl siding cluster close together but boast enough room in the backyard for a children’s playset. As developers eye this area for growth, new constructions and refurbished properties are starting to appear on the market. While these new builds can be priced at $400,000, renovation-ready homes can sell for around $200,000. “A lot of people also like that area for the Airbnb market,” adds Kathryn Cook-Crespo, broker and Realtor with Nestlewood Realty. “Any house in that area is a great investment because it’s so close to the airport. You’ll see a lot of crash pads for flight attendants, and you have the freedom to do that because there’s no homeowners association.”Cafes, diners and neighborhood watering holes
Errands are easy with a Walmart Supercenter along Wilkinson Boulevard. Thanks to the neighborhood's proximity to the airport, a couple of chain restaurants and a wealth of hotels can be found along I-85, but more and more small businesses are finding success in this lower-cost side of town. CupLux Coffee is a close-by caffeine fix right across the street from Po Boy’s Low Country Seafood, a local favorite quick-serve joint famous for its variety of po boy sandwiches that range from catfish to alligator. Carolina Family Restaurant has been a neighborhood mainstay for almost 50 years, accommodating hungry locals in its old-school diner-style digs. On Friday nights, folks head down to Coyote Joe’s to dance the night away in this country bar complete with a mechanical bull and line dancing.Neighborhood green space and indoor challenge courses
Tall trees and a rustic picket fence encircle Westerly Hills Park. This small patch of green space follows a tributary of Taggart Creek and is a popular outdoor gathering space for residents whose homes back right up to the playground. The shelter is perfect for cookouts while watching the kids let loose on the ballfield or the basketball court. For indoor fun, folks head to the nearby District 57, a sprawling entertainment complex with a dystopian theme. In this industrial space, visitors can play laser tag or test their teamwork in a 30-room challenge arena, all while sipping on self-pour beverages and snacking on pizza.Students receive a strong STEM-based foundation
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are conveniently close to home. Parents walk their little ones to school at Westerly Hills Academy before they move up to Wilson STEM Academy. The middle school is a partial magnet for computer science and engineering and integrates STEM principles such as problem-solving and teamwork into the core curriculum. Public school students round out their education at Harding University High. All three schools score a C grade from Niche.Skip the traffic into Uptown
Westerly Hills is planted just below I-85 along major thoroughfares such as Wilkinson Boulevard, making it a 4-mile straight shot into Uptown. The Charlotte Douglas International Airport is even closer — residents can reach the terminal in just 3 miles or less than 10 minutes. While this is a car-dependent suburb, public transit options are steadily improving. Charlotte Area Transit System buses already serve the area, and the planned LYNX Silver Line will run along Wilkinson Boulevard, connecting the airport and Uptown. Many residents and business owners in the area are bracing for significant growth once the new light rail line is complete.
