Cisco is a small unincorporated community in northern Murray County, only 2 miles south of the Tennessee state line. Also referred to as “North Murray,” this area is highly rural and mostly comprised of residential properties spread across farmlands and natural areas. The few non-residential properties include the local postal office and the Cisco Baptist Church. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the community was home to approximately 3,400 residents as of 2020. The nearest town is Chatsworth, about 13 miles south down U.S. Route 411, while the county seat of Dalton is a half-hour drive away. Bordering Cisco to the east is the Cohutta Wilderness, a sprawling outdoor recreation area with more than a dozen hiking trails. Two key industries in this area are agriculture and manufacturing; many people are employed by Murray County’s new Appalachian Regional Port, a manufacturing facility on a 42-acre campus just north of Chatsworth. Cisco has an overall CAP Index Crime Score of 2 out of 10, lower than the national average of 4.
Relatively affordable homes on large lots
One of the major draws of living in Cisco is that residents can enjoy ample space and privacy at a relatively affordable cost. The median lot size here is approximately 1.2 acres, and the median single-family home price is $260,000, lower than national and state levels. The complete pricing range of homes here goes from approximately $160,000 up to $530,000, and the housing stock primarily consists of farmhouses, ranch-style properties and midcentury traditional homes. The median house age in Cisco is 1980, and 80% of residents are homeowners.
Attending Murray County Schools
Cisco students are zoned for the Murray County Schools district, which receives an overall B-minus rating from Niche. The community is split between two primary schools for prekindergarten through sixth grade: Eton Elementary and Northwest Elementary School, both rated B-minus. Bagley Middle School also has a B-minus rating and serves grades seven and eight. Secondary students can attend the B-rated North Murray High School, which offers Career, Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) pathway options. North Murray’s athletic department oversees 10 sports and manages a championship-winning archery team.
Outdoor recreation in the Cohutta Mountains
Covering over 37,000 acres of land, the Cohutta Wilderness Area is Cisco’s prime spot for outdoor recreation. Part of the larger Cohutta Mountains range, this wilderness area has approximately 90 miles of hiking trails stretching across its hilly terrain. The Consauga River Trail and Jackson River Trail are two of the most popular trails, with the latter leading to a 70-foot waterfall attraction at Jackson River Falls. Several trails in the area can accommodate off-roading vehicles like motorcycles and ATVs. At Cohutta Overlook, people can enjoy scenic views of the mountains and surrounding Chattahoochee National Forest, which the Cohutta Wilderness Area is a part of. According to Rachel Callihan-Cowart, a local Realtor with Ansley Real Estate at Christie's International Real Estate, horseback riding in the Chattahooche National Forest is a particularly popular activity. Cohutta Springs is a resort near the base of the mountain range that closes between May and July to host an annual youth summer camp.
Shopping and dining in Chatsworth and Dalton
Commercial amenities in Cisco are mostly limited to Dollar General and Jack’s River Mart, a local convenience store. On the way down U.S. Route 411 towards Chatsworth, the community of Eton has a small selection of restaurants, including Paul’s Drive-In and Pleasant Valley Family Restaurant. Chatsworth has two grocery stores – Food City and Ingles Market – and numerous fast-food and convenience store chains. Other chain establishments in Chatsworth include Walgreens, Tractor Supply Co. and numerous discount dollar stores. For additional shopping and dining, Dalton is 22 miles away from Cisco and has big-box stores and national retailers.
Cisco residents rely on U.S. Route 411
Cisco is a heavily car-dependent community without public transportation or local transit services. U.S. Route 411, also called Highway 411, is a major thoroughfare that runs north-south through Cisco and the rest of Murray County. The intersection of Route 411 and Georgia State Route 2, or Old Highway 2, represents the “center” of Cisco as the location of the community’s postal office, Cisco Baptist Church and local convenience market. The nearest airport, Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport, is a 45-minute drive away, or roughly 40 miles. AdventHealth Murray is a hospital with a 24-hour emergency room located in Chatsworth. Before AdventHealth acquired and renamed the facility in 2020, the hospital was known as the Murray Medical Center.
