Fairplay is a rural area in Douglas County where residents value open spaces

The rural community of Fairplay, a census-designated place about 30 miles west of Atlanta in southern Douglas County, is a place where homebuyers can find large lots away from the noise of the city. “It’s open land, and a lot of people want to keep it that way,” says Bailey Bolton, a Fairplay resident of more than 20 years. “It has a country feel. I know my neighbors, and I have their numbers in case their animals get out.” The still-developing community does not have restaurants or shops to call its own, but several green spaces are close by, as are smaller cities like Douglasville, where Fairplay residents head for fun and excitement.

Ranch-style homes and larger estates on spacious lots

Ranch-style homes can go from $250,000 to $375,000. Larger multilevel homes usually range from $365,000 to $485,000, with some estates on lots of 5 acres or more selling for $630,000 to $670,000. Most area roads are single-lane and are lined with tall trees. Houses are often far apart. While some streets have sidewalks, many do not. The community has a CAP Index Crime Score of 1 out of 10, well below the national average of 4.

The Douglas County School System and the Liberal Arts College Preparatory Program

Students are served by the Douglas County School System. They can attend South Douglas Elementary School, which has an A-minus Niche grade. Fairplay Middle School has a B-plus rating. Alexander High School offers the Liberal Arts College Preparatory Program, designed to grow students’ reading, writing and speaking abilities and help them critically analyze ideas. The school earns a B-plus Niche grade.

Access to neighboring cities like Atlanta, but watch out for animals on the road

While there is not much traffic in Fairplay, residents should keep their eyes on the road. “You’ll find some deer and armadillos, so you have to watch out,” Bolton says. Georgia State Route 5 runs east of the community. The West End of Atlanta is around 30 miles east, as is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Bolton says she ventures into the city a few times a year for big concerts and special events. Tanner Medical Center Villa Rica, an acute care hospital with more than 50 beds, is close to 10 miles away. Like other parts of Northwest Georgia, the area has a moderate risk of tornadoes and landslides caused by heavy rain.

Shops and eateries in neighboring cities like Douglasville and Villa Rica

Residents have to drive to neighboring cities for shopping and dining. Bolton says people quickly get used to the travel. In Villa Rica, about 10 miles away, Evan’s Barbeque Company is known for its signature fried eggrolls filled with smoked pork, and Gabe’s Downtown is a Creole-style bistro. It is also home to a Publix Super Market. In Douglasville, also about 10 miles away, Fin & Feathers serves upscale chicken and seafood entrees. The area also has Target and several other big-box stores.

Athletic facilities, riding lessons and hiking trails

Fairplay Park has baseball and softball fields, basketball courts and a playground. Hawk Feather Ranch offers horse riding lessons. Other green spaces sit close to the area. Dog River Trails, next to Dog River Public Library, has three options for hikes, with one trail leading to Flybow Creek. It also has a disc golf course. Bolton, who works as a library assistant, says the trails get moderate use despite being a bit out of the way. St. Andrews Golf and Country Club has an 18-hole public course and is renovating its facilities. There are several churches in and around the area to visit. In Douglasville, the GreyStone Amphitheater hosts concerts and other special events.
