Over the Chattahoochee River and through the woods, the community of Fouts Mill offers a rural retreat about 30 miles from Atlanta. Homebuyers are drawn to the area for its serenity, spacious homes and lots, and relative affordability. Situated in Douglas County, Fouts Mill is devoid of retail, but plenty of dining and shopping options are 10 miles away in Douglasville. “It’s very popular with commuters to Atlanta. You are close, but far away from the hustle of the city,” says Windy Gamel, broker and co-owner of Southern Home Management Solutions. “It’s a relaxing area. And the taxes are lower than Atlanta.”

That's much lower than the national average of 4. “It’s a great area for nature lovers who want peace and quiet. You have the availability of recreation at the reservoir,” says Gamel, who grew up in the area. “The big deal of it is that you get that rural feel.”

The Church Street Farmers Market is also held there every Tuesday from June to October. “Residents of the neighborhood gravitate towards the many events in downtown Douglasville every month,” Harvey says.
Dog River Reservoir is the place for fishing
Locals head to the 200-acre Dog River Reservoir, sourced by the Chattahoochee River, to spend the day on the water. It’s a popular spot to kayak or reel in catfish, bass and sunfish. There are grills and picnic tables for cooking out and Jon boat rentals are available. The reservoir on River Road is only open to Douglas County residents.
