Why Northshore is one of the pricier areas in Chattanooga

The housing inventory in Northshore spans more than a century, with 20th-century bungalows and Craftsman homes sitting alongside sleek contemporary houses. Heading east along Barton Avenue, you can find some luxury ranch-style and Colonial Revival homes on peaceful, tree-lined streets, and condos are also found in some parts of the community. When it comes to pricing, Northshore has one of the highest average prices per square foot in the city, at about $330. "That's really due to the location," says Tim Carter, a broker at Keller Williams with over 20 years of experience. "The proximity to downtown and working there, that's really the reason why." Most homes cost between the mid-$300,000s and the upper $800,000s, but there are large properties over 3,000 square feet that range from the upper $900,000s to the $1.6 million range. Condo prices typically fall between the mid-$200,000s and the upper $700,000s.

Burgers, sandwiches and ice cream headline local dining spots

The southern part of the neighborhood along Frazier Avenue and Cherokee Boulevard is home to several popular restaurants, including one of Carter's favorites. "I would say for quality of food, bang for your buck, it's Taco Mamacita," he says. "It's a really great restaurant, and always good service and food." Here are some other local favorites nearby:

  • Brewhaus, a German-themed restaurant known for its schnitzel, pretzels and beers
  • River Street Deli, a New York-style sandwich shop with daily specials
  • Hoppy's North River Corner Market, a small convenience store that won Best Classic Burger during Chattanooga Burger Week
  • Clumpie's Ice Cream Co., which has been serving handmade ice cream since 1999

Driving, biking and walking options for Northshore residents

Getting around town is a breeze from Northshore, with North Market Street providing a quick 1-mile drive across the river to City Center. The Walnut Street Bridge is a popular route for locals who prefer walking or biking downtown. U.S. Route 27 is also nearby for longer trips throughout the region. While the popularity of the shops and restaurants brings lots of visitors to the neighborhood, Carter says there is plenty of parking and the streets are easy to navigate. The neighborhood's walkability is another big draw, but Carter says there are parts of the community where you might be better off driving. "Walkability is sort of subjective, because Northshore is actually called Hill City," he says. "You're walking downhill to Frazier Avenue and you're going to have a real difficult walk back after you're finished eating."
