Saint Elmo is a historic neighborhood at the foot of Lookout Mountain

Early 20th-century homes line St. Elmo Avenue, taking you back in time as you drive through one of the oldest neighborhoods in Chattanooga. One of just four historic districts in the city, Saint Elmo sits at the base of Lookout Mountain and offers easy access to some of the area's most popular attractions, including the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway and Rock City. Walkable streets make it easy to get to the cluster of shops and restaurants in the community's north end, and with St. Elmo Avenue connecting to Broad Street, you'll have straightforward commutes throughout the Scenic City.

Established homes in a historic district of Chattanooga

Houses from the late 1800s and early 1900s fill the streets of Saint Elmo, including Victorians, bungalows and Craftsman houses in a variety of colors. Spacious front porches are common, offering room to sit and chat with neighbors as they stroll by. Many homes have been renovated, while others still need work to restore them to their heyday. Saint Elmo is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is also a locally designated historic district. Homes within the local historic district are subject to extra regulations, so many renovation projects require approval from the Historic Zoning Commission. You can also find new construction homes throughout the community, but they are rare. Prices in the neighborhood typically range from the mid-$200,000s to the upper $700,000s.

A lot of people like to walk around everywhere, and everyone knows everyone," says Linda Palacio, a Realtor at Zach Taylor Chattanooga with over 20 years of experience. "It's a very quaint, very nice area." Some of the spots you can visit here include:

  • The Purple Daisy Picnic CafĂ©, an eclectic, casual option for barbecue and sandwiches
  • T's Pizza & Ice Cream, which has been serving the neighborhood since 1989
  • The Tap House, a modern American restaurant with an extensive craft beer menu

Additionally, groceries and other household items are available nearby at stores like CVS and Publix.

Trails, parks and scenic attractions are close to home

Recreation is easy to find in Saint Elmo, from small city parks to scenic mountaintop attractions. You can hike on the side of Lookout Mountain on the St. Elmo Trail or the Guild Trail. If you want an easier way to the top, the Lookout Mountain Incline Railway offers daily trips. "It's touristy, but locals do it all the time. It goes up to the battlefields and up to Lookout Mountain. It's beautiful up there," Palacio says. At the top of the 1-mile railway, you can walk to Point Park, which has Civil War historical markers, monuments and scenic overlooks of the region. Just across the Georgia state line, you can visit Rock City, featuring walking paths through ancient rock formations and panoramic viewpoints. Other spots include St. Elmo Park, which has playgrounds and outdoor fitness equipment and Ben Miller Park, which includes a basketball court, tennis court and dog park.
