Southside combines history and modernity
Southside, 5 minutes from Chattanooga, is a historic district that always stays in style. “It’s not up-and-coming anymore. It’s here. It’s probably the most relocated neighborhood for younger people and professionals, it’s super walkable, and there’s so much to do,” says Diane Patty, a Realtor with Greater Downtown Realty. Previously known for its abandoned warehouses, Southside now houses a sculpture garden, postmodern condos and a recently renovated train station that features everything from restaurants to comedy clubs. While Southside is an urban area mere minutes from Chattanooga, the residential spots have evenly spaced homes with front and back yards next to thin sidewalks lining wide roads.
Southside is only minutes from downtown and easy access to I-24.
Southside is home to the Chattanooga Choo Choo in Tennessee.

The Chattanooga Choo Choo
Publix and Walgreens can be found across the Tennessee River for groceries and other necessities. Honey Seed is a local favorite for hand-rolled bagels in the morning and woodfired pizza at noon. The Chattanooga Choo Choo is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike. “The entire building was renovated; it used to be a railway station. People know it from the ‘Chattanooga Choo Choo’ song, that’s what kept it open. It’s an anchor for the neighborhood,” says Patty. The renovated railway station is a hotel, restaurant center, music and comedy venue all rolled into one. Visitors can grab a whiskey at Backstage Bar, catch a show at the Choo Choo Centennial Theatre or stroll through the Glenn Miller Gardens.
Southside is one of many hotspots to live, play, and dine in Chattanooga in Tennessee.

Craftsman homes and modern townhouses
The housing market in Southside is highly competitive, and properties go quickly. Many homes in the area are either newly constructed or well-maintained vintage. The houses are often tall with vertical frames to save space. Eclectically painted Craftsman-style houses sit next to the broad pillared porches of bungalows. Condo space is common in new construction, usually two-story homes with individual balconies. Some buildings are distinctly modern, giving the neighborhood an updated flare. Newly constructed condos and townhouses go for $450,000 to $525,000. Single-family homes in the area range from $375,000 to $675,000.

The MAINx24 festival happens annually in December off Main Street and goes non-stop for 24 hours. There’s a huge parade, art showings, food cook-off competitions and live music. Its ongoing purpose is to celebrate how the Southside continues to grow as a diverse and artistic area supported by its spirited residents.
