Walkable, bikeable community on the Tennessee River
Westside has endured and welcomed metamorphosis, from its past as an industrial district during the early 20th century, to a complete urban renewal as the century ended. Today, the area is seeing yet another exciting growth spurt with the “Westside Evolves” initiative in place and its prime location in the heart of Scenic City. Westside—like much of the city core—is relatively walkable and bikeable. Its location at the waterfront is also an enormous appeal for many residents, giving scenic views of the Tennessee River and not-so-distant mountains. Chattanooga is in a central location as it’s only about two hours from Knoxville, Nashville and Atlanta, according to Tiffany Owens, a Realtor with EXP Realty, LLC who has lived in Chattanooga her whole life. “Westside specifically has a great ‘lake life’ with a lot of summer activities like concerts on the river,” says Owens. “This makes it a very popular area but still, it’s not overcrowded. It’s the best of both worlds.” With plenty of history under its belt and exciting growth plans, Westside is a fun pick for downtown living.

Tennessee Aquarium, Creative Discovery Museum
Westside keeps residents' calendars full of weekend staples such as the Tennessee Aquarium and Creative Discovery Museum. Chattanooga loves its community events—like the Riverbend Festival and Rivermarket—which Westside has easy access to. For nearly four decades, a festival of three days of live music, ranging from classic rock to bluegrass, is appreciated at Ross's Landing in the summertime. In March, the Rivermarket rolls out at the aquarium plaza every weekend and features food trucks, art vendors and local musicians.
The Creative Discovery Museum is an educational and fun trip for Westside families.

Tennessee Riverwalk's 16-mile path
Westside Park is where people go to play on the open baseball field and playground. The Westside Community Center sits next to the park. Here, kids visit for organized sports and an annual summer camp. Golfers head just 7 miles—or 10 minutes—across the river to Moccasin Bend Golf Course to practice their swing and participate in tournaments. The Blue Goose Hollow Trailhead takes walkers or runners directly to the Tennessee Riverwalk, a 16-mile paved path that follows the river's bend around the city.

Modern brick condomuniums from $250,000
Since Westside used to be an industrial and commercial area, it doesn't have vintage, whimsical homes like some other neighborhoods. Instead, condominiums account for nearly all residential space, with brick modern exteriors. Condos range from $250,000 to $700,000. There are also townhouses with traditional architecture and high elevation sprinkled near the river, ranging from $600,000 to $1.2 million. Pricing is determined by proximity to the river. Homes typically sit on the market for 57 days compared to the national average of 42 days.

Nursing, robotics, architecture at The Howard School
Several nearby public and private schools are available to children living in Westside. If kids follow the traditional public route, they'll begin their education at Tommie F. Brown International Academy, which earns a C-plus from Niche. Children move on to C-rated Orchard Knob Middle, where they can participate in many athletic programs. Students finish up at The Howard School, which has several partnerships where students can learn career skills in fields such as nursing, robotics and architecture. The school receives a C from Niche. Another option is Chattanooga School for the Arts & Sciences, which has high graduation rates and an A from Niche.

Nightlife along Market Street
Living in Westside comes with city excitement and convenience—and a scarcity of grocery store options—due to its urban environment. People visit Bingo’s Market, the go-to grocer in the neighborhood, or Westside Grocery, a quick convenience store that’s closer to town. Residents can get a taste of New Orleans with dishes like crawfish and gumbo at Parkway Pourhouse. Diners enjoy uniquely flavored tacos and a full tequila bar at Agave & Rye. So much of Westside’s lively atmosphere comes from its closeness to hangouts and nightlife that sit along Market Street, waiting for patrons to come in and order a round. “STIR has the best drinks in town, and good food too,” says Owens. “I also like going here at night because of the pretty lights strung along the street.”

Get around Chattanooga on I-24
The ease of transportation is a draw for residents and potential homebuyers, Owens says. While the area is very walkable, Westside has a CAP index score of 9 out of 10 for crime, compared to the national average of 4. It’s also a very bike-friendly area. Drivers hop on Interstate 24 to reach most places in Chattanooga, including the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport, just 7 miles away. Commuters have access to plenty of bus stops along Main and Grove Street.
