Sportsman’s Paradise in the Louisiana Bayou
In the 18th century, Spanish settlers made a common mistake: They couldn’t tell the difference between an alligator and a crocodile. Mired in the swamps of Louisiana, they mistook the reptile for a crocodile, or “cocodrilo.” (In fact, gators are legion.) Eventually, the word took on a Cajun French drawl and became “cocodrie.” Today, it’s the name of a fishing and shrimping village at the terminus of Louisiana Highway 56, where the bayou trickles into the Gulf. “When people say they’re going to Cocodrie, they mean they’re going to fish,” says Chris Singleton, a journalism and communications instructor at Nicholls State University in nearby Thibodaux. “They call it the Sportsman’s Paradise,” adds Belinda “Bea” Prosperie, executive director of Terrebonne Parish Recreational District 7. Located about 30 miles south of Houma, the village is surrounded by saltwater marsh and widely regarded as one of the best inshore fishing spots on the Gulf Coast. Duck hunting and crabbing — and gator spotting — are also popular pastimes in this low, marshy region.

Casting a line in Cocodrie
The Gulf’s subtropical climate makes Cocodrie a fishing destination all year long. Multiple charters — Louisiana Livin Adventures, Fish Heads and Topwater Charters among them — provide guide services, bait, fuel and ice. Some also offer lodging packages and onsite restaurants. The “Louisiana blast and cast” trip from Coastal Charter Services combines duck hunting with a day of charter fishing, mostly for redfish, trout, catfish, crappie and largemouth bass. Offshore trips provide opportunities to land tuna or amberjack. Anglers with their own boats launch from Harbor Light Marina or Tradewinds of Cocodrie, another marina stationed along Highway 56. Coco Marina is currently under construction and should provide another option once the improvements are complete. Marguerite Moffett Audubon Sanctuary is a prime birdwatching area right on the marsh, although many boards on the boardwalk are either suffering from rot or missing entirely.

Stilt houses and waterfront homes
Although Cocodrie is a touristy area that caters to fishermen, it has a small year-round population, estimated at around 300. Homes are elevated on stilts to minimize the risk of flood damage. Many are marketed as camps or second homes, featuring boat slips, decks, outdoor kitchens, and fish cleaning stations. With houses built so close together, privacy is hard to come by, but water access is the main draw in this community. Properties in “Sportsman’s Paradise” fetch higher prices than similar ones in nearby communities. A small lot or boat slip might cost $50,000 to $200,000, while three- or four-bedroom stilt houses are priced from $200,000 to $600,000.

Live croakers at Cajun Bait
Folks heading to Cocodrie to fish might stop at Cajun Bait on the 15-mile drive south from Chauvin. The shop on Driftwood Drive opens early in the morning to sell live shrimp and croakers. More bait, gas, ice and other provisions are available at Cecil Lapeyrouse Grocery, which operates from a weathered roadside shack a short distance down the road. Seafood wholesalers and markets, like RCP Seafood and Faith Family Shrimp Co., feel like part of the landscape. With the seafood restaurant at Coco Marina closed during the renovations, residents travel north to Houma when they want to dine out. More grocery options are available at Rouses Market in Houma or Piggly Wiggly in Chauvin.

Moving up at Upper Little Caillou Elementary
Since the year-round population is so small, there aren’t many school-aged children living in Cocodrie. Those who call the place home start at Upper Little Caillou Elementary School, which earns a B-plus from Niche and is 30 miles away in Houma. Next up is Lacache Middle School, which also receives a B-plus, followed by South Terrebonne High School, which earns an A-minus. The middle and high schools are right next to each other in Bourg, also 30 miles north, just outside Houma. In Cocodrie, the Marine Education Program at the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium uses its coastal setting to support and instruct future marine scientists.

Montegut/Cocodrie Fourth of July Boat Parade
During the Montegut/Cocodrie Fourth of July Boat Parade, celebrants gather to check out the festively decorated vessels cruising down Bayou Little Caillou. The parade starts at the Bush Canal, just south of Chauvin, and goes all the way to the end of Highway 56 in Cocodrie. Judges determine which boats take home prizes for Best Decorated Boat, with separate categories for large and small crafts. The event takes place in the evening, typically on the first Saturday after July 4th.
End of the road on Louisiana Highway 56
Louisiana Highway 56 snakes alongside Bayou Little Caillou on the 10-mile journey south from Chauvin and ends at the water’s edge. Houma, Terrebonne Parish’s largest city, is 30 miles north of Cocodrie and home to Leonard J. Chabert Medical Center, the closest hospital. It’s also where most jobs are, although full-time Cocodrie residents might fish for a living or work for one of the nearby charter companies.
Cocodrie and coastal erosion
Images from the Earth Observatory at NASA show Louisiana’s coastline slowly vanishing into the sea. “A hundred years ago, there was a lot of land down there, but with erosion, Louisiana is losing a lot of land,” Singleton says. Flooding is always a concern, especially during hurricane season. Cocodrie is one of many bayou communities that sustained major damage when Hurricane Ida tore through the region in 2021.
