Littleton Road offers a compact community close to I-495
On the outskirts of Chelmsford, Littleton Road offers some of the lowest-priced homes in town. Chelmsford was incorporated in 1655 and was supported by its mills and quarries for much of its history. The construction of the Middlesex Canal, a 27-mile waterway that connected the Merrimack River to the Port of Boston, saw Chelmsford grow into a populated suburb in the early 1800s. While areas closer to Lowell became subdivisions, South Chelmsford retained more of the town’s agricultural identity. Littleton Road, however, carved out its own compact community of lower-priced properties. “While the rest of South Chelmsford is pretty rural, there’s a lot of condos and rental properties available here,” says Pat Dearborn, vice president for Coldwell Banker Residential, who’s been selling homes in the area for over 35 years. The north end of the neighborhood is zoned for industrial use and has access to Interstate 495, providing access to Boston in less than an hour.

Brisk market of single-family, condos and manufactured homes
The neighborhood features a mix of single-family homes, condos and manufactured homes. There are Colonials from as early as 1880, as well as newer Cape Cods and ranch-style homes. Single-family homes typically sell for $600,000 to $900,000. Condominium buildings line Littleton Road, offering two- and three-bedroom units that usually go for $300,000 to $500,000. Two- to four-bedroom manufactured homes in the Chelmsford Commons Community sell for $70,000 to $150,000. “Homes are usually only available for a couple of weeks. Chelmsford’s market moves very fast,” says Dearborn.

Hiking and biking through the area
The town’s former Lime Kiln Quarry, which operated from 1700 to 1830, became a 66-acre conservation area in 2011. The looping 1.3-mile trail weaves through forest and around abandoned caves, and the quarry’s limestone gives the soil a high pH level that supports uncommon plants. South of the neighborhood, the Bruce Freeman Rail Trail is a 16-mile path from Acton to Lowell that follows former railroad tracks. Heart Pond Beach provides swimming access and a sliver of sandy coast, as well as a playground. And golfers can head 2 miles south to the Chelmsford Country Club, which is open to the public, for a nine-hole course and an on-site pro shop.
