Westlands
Peaceful retreats in a New England neighborhood
Comprised primarily of single-family homes along gridded but hilly residential blocks, most houses in Westlands were built throughout the 20th century and include raised ranches, Cape Cods and Garrison-styles. Single-family homes usually list between $500,000 and under $1 million, with newly constructed properties taking up the higher end of the price range. Lots tend to be around a quarter-acre to 1 acre in size, and yards are usually well-kept. Several condos and townhouses can be spotted, and are around $200,000 and $450,000, respectively. “The north part of Chelmsford has older homes,” says Angela Caputo Griswold, a local resident and Realtor at ERA Key Realty Services with 6 years of experience. “Homes here cost less than neighboring Westford, so the property value is good, and you get more space for the money.”The A-rated Chelmsford Public Schools
Students here are zoned for Chelmsford Public Schools, which has an overall A Niche rating. Prospective schools include the K-4 Center Elementary School, Parker Middle School for fifth and sixth grades, and McCarthy Middle School for grades seven through eight. All three schools have an A-minus Niche score. Chelmsford High School earns an A and offers dual-enrollment business and engineering classes in conjunction with Middlesex Community College. The high school also has a comprehensive language department that provides students with travel abroad and cultural enrichment opportunities.Department stores and businesses at Chelmsford Mall
Westlands is home to Chelmsford Mall, which has retailers, businesses and department stores such as Carter’s and Kohl’s. Stop & Shop sits adjacent to the shopping center, and Market Basket is in East Gate Plaza. Walmart is north of U.S. Route 3 in Lowell and is about 1 mile away. Several established restaurants are also in the neighborhood, including Moonstones, a tapas and small plates eatery that has a playful exterior. Feng Shui Sushi Hibachi Lounge serves hibachi-style entrees, signature sushi rolls and a buffet for lunch.Public parks and playgrounds around town
About 5 miles north, Freeman Park has a sports field, pickleball and basketball courts, walking paths and Varney Playground, a play area with slides and swings. The adjacent 83-acre Freeman Lake has a public beach and is a popular place for swimming in the summer. Friendship Park, which is less than 4 miles west of the community, offers similar athletic amenities, a big playground featuring ziplines and climbing structures and a small pond for walks by the waterfront. People can also bike along the 25-mile Bruce Freeman Rail Trail that stretches from Lowell to Framingham, go boating along the Merrimack River, or book tee times at the nine-hole private Mount Pleasant Golf Club. “The Bruce Freeman Rail Trail is a big draw for people here,” Griswold says.Navigating to New Hampshire and Boston
The community is near the junction of Interstate 495 and U.S. Route 3, making it easy for residents to access the highways. “I think Chelmsford as a whole is very convenient,” Ludwig says. “We get a lot of people who need to commute.” The capital city and the Boston Logan International Airport are about 30 to 35 miles south via U.S. Route 3 and Interstate 93, and the area is about 13 miles away from the New Hampshire border. Those who take public transit into Boston can first take the Lowell Regional Transit Authority’s bus service to Lowell, and from Lowell’s train station, take the MBTA commuter rail. Lowell General Hospital is approximately 4 miles north of the neighborhood and across the Merrimack River.Town-wide celebrations and art centers
The Chelmsford Community of the Arts provides many art workshops, exhibits and events. The gallery space usually has five to seven exhibits every season, with weekly trivia, karaoke or open-mic nights on rotation. The art center is also home to the Chelmsford Children’s Chorus and organizes annual events such as a holiday musical produced by the community theater. Festivals hosted by the town include the Independence Day Parade & Country Fair, which has a traditional 2-mile road race and activities for children. The Holiday Gift Stroll of Center Village, features live caroling, free gift-wrapping and shopping from local vendors.
