Admirals Hill
Historic housing in Admirals Hill
Though Chelsea Naval Hospital closed its doors in 1974, several of its historic buildings were converted into housing complexes in the 1980s. Maple trees and green hedges decorate the residential streets, which tend to have sidewalks and expansive parking lots. Condo and penthouse prices range from the upper $400,000s and to the mid $600,000s. Amenities at these complexes often include swimming pools and community spaces, while some units have balconies and fenced-in yards. Buyers won’t find single-family homes in Admirals Hill, but a number of colonial-style, brick-fronted townhouses are available, often selling between about $700,000 and $950,000. "The townhouses are basically attached single-family homes, in my opinion. They're really nice." Duggan says. Relative affordability is also a major draw, as Duggan explains, "It feels like city living but without the city prices."Outdoor recreation for adults, kids and pets
Not all of the naval hospital's 88 acres of grounds became residences. A plot overlooking the river was transformed into Mary O’Malley State Park, where walking trails weave through green lawns, gazebos and scattered benches, and where visitors can play on the jungle gym and tennis courts. Pet owners can visit the Mystic Dog Park & Outdoor Gym, just east of the Tobin Memorial Bridge. The park allows dogs to run free while owners use the public exercise equipment. The neighborhood’s location on the water attracts boat enthusiasts, with numerous docking and launching options. Both the Chelsea Yacht Club, founded in 1886, and the Marina at Admirals Hill offer summer slips and winter boat storage.Home to major city-wide events
Events within the neighborhood often take place at O'Malley State Park. There, residents can watch Boston’s Fourth of July fireworks or attend the free, annual kite festival. The park also hosts the Admirals Hill National Night Out, an evening of entertainment and food trucks for community members and local law enforcement. The city celebrated its 400-year anniversary in the fall of 2024 with the Chelsea Day Parade, which concluded with fireworks in the state park. During the holiday season, Santa comes to town on a firetruck, and the town gathers for a tree lighting. Other activities, like races for charity, yard sales and Chelsea Public Library events reflect a high level of neighborhood pride and involvement.Top Chelsea restaurants and shopping at Mystic Mall
To grab a bite to eat or run a few errands, Admirals Hill residents head into the heart of Chelsea. Broadway features a variety of cuisines at spots like Rincón Hondureño and Mi Salvador Mexicano. Ciao! Pizza and Pasta is another local mainstay that’s self-proclaimed as the No. 1 Neapolitan pizza restaurant in Greater Boston. Just down the road, Chelsea Station Restaurant Bar & Lounge serves American fare and craft cocktails in a historic firehouse. Across the street, Mystic Mall, has a wide selection of stores like Market Basket, T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods.Public education in Chelsea
Thanks to the state’s school choice program, Admirals Hill families can pick from nearby public options. Students in kindergarten through eighth grader may start at Sokolowski Elementary and Clark Avenue School, both rated C-minus by Niche. They can then transition to Chelsea High, which earns a C and offers several academic opportunities, including an Early College Program in coordination with Bunker Hill Community College. All three schools are less than 2 miles from most residences in Admirals Hill.Transportation options in Admirals Hill, Chelsea and Boston
Though Admirals Hill is very walkable, residents have several Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority bus stops within the neighborhood. And they can take commuter rail from Chelsea station, about a mile away, into the city. Route 1 flows along the eastern border of the neighborhood, allowing for a 10-to-15-minute commute across the Tobin Memorial Bridge into downtown Boston. Locals don’t have to go through city traffic for a flight, with Boston Logan International Airport about 3 miles southeast. The neighborhood may experience mild noise from the airport's flights.
