Suburban Neighborhood in Chesterfield, Virginia

The Chesterfield County Courthouse
The historic Chesterfield County Courthouse is the neighborhood’s centerpiece. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992, the courthouse has served the county since 1749. While a new building was erected in 1917, it stands on the same grounds as the original courthouse. In the area surrounding the courthouse are various other government buildings, like the Department of Social Services and the Chesterfield County Detention Center. Also nearby are The Chesterfield County Public Library and the Magnolia Grange Museum, which mimics a 19th-century Virginia home.Homes set back from roads
Chesterfield Courthouse is the kind of place where people sit on their back decks in the summer and watch deer run through their open backyards. Homes typically sit far from the road, with long driveways leading to them. Folks in Chesterfield Courthouse value their privacy and seclusion. Home prices stay fairly consistent in the $200,000 to $450,000 range, and common styles include Colonial Revival, split-level and ranch-style. There are also some townhouse options, mostly concentrated behind the courthouse. These units typically run in the $250,000 range.Iron Bridge Road
Iron Bridge Road is the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare. “It used to be pretty remote around here,” Green says. “But within the past few years, they’ve done some construction on Iron Bridge. We used to have almost nothing, but now there’s a whole bunch of stuff.” Locals can grab groceries from Food Lion or eat out at one of the new fast-casual restaurants along Iron Bridge, like Chipotle and Starbucks. There are some local options, too, like Dante’s of Ironbridge, the neighborhood’s pizza go-to, and El Caporal Mexican Restaurant.Bird Athletic Complex and Pocahontas State Park
The Bird High School Athletic Complex spans over 14 acres. It features seven baseball fields and a Miracle League field designed specifically for individuals with mental and physical disabilities. Locals can stroll along the walking path or bring their tennis rackets for a match. Kids can enjoy the handicap-accessible playground, complete with slides and climbing structures. Locals love the neighborhood’s proximity to Pocahontas State Park, which spans over 8,000 acres. Green, who used to be a lifeguard at the park, says, “My family goes hiking there a lot, and I spent a lot of time fishing and kayaking at Pocahontas as a teenager. When I was a lifeguard, people from all over Chesterfield would come out and swim at the pool.”What’s happening at the Chesterfield County Fairgrounds
For over 100 years, Chesterfield County residents gather at the end of summer for the Chesterfield County Fair. Teenagers challenge each other to ring toss games, families watch pigs race and local musicians take the stage when the sun sets. The fairgrounds host other events throughout the year, like a Fourth of July celebration, where vendors sell goods, live music plays and children run around the Kids Zone. The evening, of course, culminates with locals looking upward at fireworks burning red, white and blue.Chesterfield County Public Schools
Students are zoned for Chesterfield County Public Schools and can attend O.B. Gates Elementary School, which gets a B from Niche. “My handprint is still on the wall of O.B. Gates,” Green says. “They have all the kids put them up before they graduate.” Then, they can attend Salem Church Middle School, which gets a C-plus, before Lloyd C. Bird High School, which earns a B-minus. L.C. Bird has the Governor’s Academy for Engineering Studies, in which students receive a basic, core understanding of various engineering fields. The program is lab-based, providing students with hands-on experience.U.S. Interstate 288
Chesterfield Courthouse is bordered by U.S. Interstate 288, which leads throughout the city of Richmond and Chesterfield County. “It’s about a 30-minute drive into Richmond,” Green says. When it’s time to fly, the Chesterfield County Airport is about a mile from the neighborhood.
