In the late 1800s, Moseley was a railroad stop in Chesterfield for trains carrying passengers and freight from the western foothills to the James River. Railroad companies needed a junction to put a post office to collect mail and a water tower to supply the engines so they purchased the land from a local man named William Moseley, which is how the town got its name.
