In Chesterfield County, a large rural suburb southwest of Richmond, Virginia, nature is all around and convenience is never too far away.
Custom homes on generously large lots dot the county’s country roads, while more traditional single-family housing still gives residents room to breathe. Many of the homes are architectural hybrids, featuring the multiple dormers of the Cape Cod style and the distinctive symmetrical windows of the Colonial Revival Style. Some homes feature both. Ranch-style homes are prevalent as well, with their horizontal designs specifically suited to a rural community. The median sales price of homes in the county was $350,000 at the end of 2022, slightly lower than the state average.
Chesterfield County is home to Virginia’s largest state park, which covers almost 8,000 acres in the community’s northeast corner. Pocahontas State Park features three lakes, including the 225-acre Swift Creek Lake that is a popular destination for fishing and boating; more than 90 miles of trails that can be traversed by foot or bike; and the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum, which tells the story of the Depression-era workers who helped build the nation’s state parks. Additional amenities include a 2,000-seat amphitheater and a seasonal aquatic center. Lake Chesdin and the Appomattox River, which form much of Chesterfield County’s border, offer additional outdoor recreation, and both are known as prime spots for fishing.
There’s plenty of room in Chesterfield County for the state’s largest zoo, too. The Metro Richmond Zoo is home to more than 2,000 animals. Fun for all ages, the zoo offers the opportunity to feed giraffes, watch orangutans lounge and experience a collection of residents that also includes big cats, small birds and everything in between. The complex also features the new Treetop Zoofari Zipline and Adventure Park, providing the opportunity to see the animals from above.
Other attractions include the 18-hole championship-level course at the Lake Chesdin Golf Club, the athletic facilities at Matoaca Park, and the many rustic wedding venues that make use of Chesterfield County’s rural beauty.
A busy commercial stretch of the Hull Street Road corridor sits between east and west portions of the community. Along the thoroughfare are an array of dining and retail options, including multiple shopping centers, big-box stores such as Walmart and Target and attractions that include the Children’s Museum of Richmond and the Swift Creek YMCA. Similar options can be found in the southeast corner on the border with Colonial Heights.
Virginia State Route 288 is nearby and provides quick access to Richmond's western suburbs.
Within the county’s borders are a number of schools, including Matoaca elementary, middle and high schools. The other Chesterfield County school in the community is Grange Hall Elementary. Two Baptists schools and two Christian academies also are available, and numerous other public schools can be found nearby. Chesterfield County Public Schools serves more than 60,000 students in grades K-12.
