Historic area close to downtown and parks
Moore Haven Heights, also known as The Avenues, is a historic district known for its picturesque brick homes and proximity to downtown. Developer Paul H. Moore envisioned the neighborhood as an upscale area. In the early to mid-20th century, it housed city political leaders and white-collar workers who loved the convenience and beautiful homes. “It is a really popular subdivision because of its character and uniqueness,” says Steve Prescott, broker and owner of RE/MAX Capitol Properties. “We have a large state presence of employment. Our State Capitol is right on Capitol Avenue. So, a lot of people will buy in these areas just to be able to walk to work.” The Avenues is quiet for the most part, but it can get busy, especially when the rodeo comes to town. It’s next to the popular Lions Park and near Francis E. Warren Air Force Base.

Tudor brick homes dominate the Avenues
Moore Haven Heights has a storybook suburban feel. The streets are lined with pale brick single-story homes with attached or detached garages behind small green front lawns. Most residences were built in the 1950s and 1960s, but some date back to the 1920s. Paved sidewalks are covered by large shady trees that sometimes form a small archway over the streets. Since it’s a historic district, homeowners have limited creative control, but the character of the homes is a point of pride. “Some homes are bungalows, some are Tudor style, and some are big two-story. You can tell who was more affluent and who wasn't when they built those homes,” Prescott says. “That’s what makes this area fun; every home has a story, more so than a planned subdivision.” Prices range from $300,000 for a smaller cottage to $900,000 for a two-story property. Except for during the blistering winters, neighbors are always outdoors, whether they’re riding bikes, walking dogs or making their way to work.

Across the street from Lions Park
Across 8th Avenue sits Lions Park, the city’s most popular green space. On sunny days, people are out and about jogging, biking and walking their dogs. The park’s walking trails eventually connect to more than 47 miles of trails in the Cheyenne Greenway. Visitors can pass by flowers in the park’s Cheyenne Botanic Gardens or Engine 1242, the oldest steam engine in the state. Wedding parties and aspiring influencers can be spotted taking pictures at both places. Sloan Lake sits in the center of Lions Park. It’s not for public swimming, but anglers can cast their lines. Kids can play in Children’s Village within the Botanic Gardens or swim in the pool at the Cheyenne Aquatic Center. Two golf courses sit within a two-mile radius of the neighborhood, including Cheyenne Country Club, the city’s only private course. Members can access the 18-hole course, pro shop, tennis courts and swimming pool. Across the street from the private club is the public Airport Golf Club, an 18-hole course is home to the Wyoming Open golf tournament. Located 24 miles away is Curt Gowdy State Park, known for its mountain biking and campgrounds. In the winter, locals go there for ice fishing, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing.

Happy Hours at Central Cafe
Central Café is a neighborhood staple. Residents walk there to get coffee and pastries in the morning or to enjoy an after-work happy hour. The coffee shop has a black-and-white Parisian-inspired interior and patio area. Espi’s is a brunch spot with a drive-thru serving comforting American favorites like pancakes and burgers. L’Osteria Mondello is an Italian eatery with two personalities. In the front, it’s an old-school pizza shop with a firing oven and fresh pies on display, but in the back, it’s an upscale dining room and patio area serving fresh pasta and seafood. Groceries can be bought at Albertsons, 2 miles north. Other shopping needs can be found 3 miles northeast at the Frontier Mall and south at the local shops downtown. The Frontier Mall includes more than 40 retail stores, such as Bath & Body Works and JCPenney.

A mile from Cheyenne Frontier Days
For 355 days of the year, the Avenues has a slow-paced, quiet feel with no traffic. But in those remaining ten days, the city’s population triples for Cheyenne Frontier Days, held at fairgrounds less than a mile away. “Frontier Days is a very traditional based rodeo,” Prescott says. “It's considered the Daddy of them all, since it’s the largest outdoor rodeo in the world.” The event held during the last full week of July has concerts, a pancake breakfast and – of course -- rodeos. “You have nine Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association events and two professional bull riding events,” says Jim Walter, Director of Sales and Marketing at Visit Cheyenne. “There’s also seven concerts; we’ve been mixing it up the last couple of years. We had Jelly Roll, Thomas Rhett, T-Pain and Ludacris.” Because it gets so busy, some residents in Moore Haven Heights will rent their yards and parking spaces to tourists. Residents who want to attend the event can use a shuttle.
Central High and McCormick Junior are Purple Star Schools
Neighborhood students can start their education at Deming Elementary, which earns a B-plus rating from Niche. Fourth and sixth-grade students can attend Miller Elementary, and seventh and eighth-grade students can attend McCormick Junior High. Both schools receive a B rating from Niche. Central High, the oldest high school in Cheyenne, also earns a B rating. It is a Purple Star school, meaning military-family students receive help and support during their transition to the area.
2 miles from downtown amenities
The Avenues is next to downtown Cheyenne, and folks can get there by driving about 2 miles south on Central Avenue. Interstate 25 is accessible via Pershing Boulevard; the interstate heads south 46 miles towards Fort Collins, Colorado and 176 miles north to Casper. Bus stops are available along Central Avenue. East of The Avenues is the Cheyenne Regional Airport, which provides daily flights to Denver International Airport. West of the neighborhood is the Francis E. Warren Air Force Base. While both these areas draw plane and helicopter activity, it is not a significant disturbance. “You may hear it a little bit, but it's nothing like living next to a location where all these Air Force planes, fighters or something taken off or a busy airport,” Prescott says.
