Grilling out at Joe Orr Woods
The wooded Joe Orr and Halsted Woods border the community's southeastern side. Alongside afternoon strolls and bike rides along the Thorne Creek Trail System, the picnic area at Joe Orr Woods sees its fair share of family reunions and small events, made possible by its pavilion and picnic grills. Directly north, on the other side of Joe Orr Road, are the public greens of Chicago Heights East Golf Cub. Nearby on 202nd Street, The Drama Group produces an array of well-known musicals for locals throughout the year.Finding community at Chicago Heights gatherings

The city also celebrates its diversity through multicultural events, including the Mexican Independence Day Parade, Juneteenth House Picnic and Fiesta Chicago Heights festival. Members of Calvary Assembly – Heights Campus and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, both local to the community, can also partake in events organized by the houses of worship.West End's mid-20th-century homes
Drives along West End’s residential streets reveal narrow sidewalks, a spread of parallel trees, and homes that provide a snapshot of a mid-20th-century suburb. Seasoned brick split-level-style homes of the era line most of the community, featuring slanted and flat horizontal roofs. One-car driveways and detached garages are situated on the side of homes, while front and backyards evenly split the quarter-acre lots. Moving into the latter half of the 1900s and early 21st century, ranch and New Traditional styles were introduced into parts of the community. “Chicago Heights is a more affordable community, and the West End is where you’ll find lower-priced housing," Hackel says. Most homes here fall within $55,000 to $250,000, while larger or recently renovated homes can reach up to $400,000.Commuting to downtown Chicago
The city is a 30-mile drive north on Interstate 57, though Olympia Station, 2 miles west, offers hour-long rides to downtown on the Orange Line train. "It's within a doable commute," Hackel says of the community. Those making trips to Chicago Midway International Airport can reach their flights along a 21-mile drive via I-294, which sits 5 miles north of the community. Meanwhile, the services at Community Hospital are located 10 miles northeast, off Macarthur Boulevard.Sweet tooth remedies from Zarlengo's Soft Serve
Mr. Stacks Chicago Heights on Dixie Highway offers breakfast in the form of French toast and a variety of skillet-style menu offerings. Meanwhile, longstanding Zarlengo’s Soft Serve three blocks south on Joe Orr Road has been handing out sweet treats from its window since 1986. Next door is Olympia Plaza Shopping Center, home to chain spots like Subway and Little Caesars Pizza, Country Squire Foods for groceries and a handful of retail shops. Residents can also make 2-mile trips southwest to a Walmart Supercenter off Western Avenue. Those utilizing public transportation can hop on the Pace bus system, which runs several stops along Halsted Street and connects riders to the greater Chicago Metro Area.Homewood-Flossmoor High School's artistic programming
