Eclectic and close community in northern Chicago
The community comes alive in the northside neighborhood of Andersonville, thanks to its eclectic small businesses and rotating calendar of events. Only 9.5 miles from downtown Chicago, the neighborhood is a blend of residential properties and retail. “We have a wonderful commercial area that has mostly independently owned businesses, so that adds a lot of character,” says Realtor India Whiteside with @properties Christie’s International Real Estate, who lives in Andersonville and has over 25 years of experience. “It’s a very diverse population, which makes it a lovely place to live.” Most residents live comfortably in condos and houses that are within walking distance from all the action. Museums, bakeries, bars and the popular Midsommarfest event all contribute to the neighborhood’s Swedish origins and energetic atmosphere.
Andersonville is a welcoming community as neighbors host block parties in the summer.

Locally owned shops and restaurants
All along Andersonville’s North Clark Street, there are hundreds of premier retail and restaurant options. “Our Chamber of Commerce is fantastic about promoting the different businesses and hosting events and activities that highlight them,” Whiteside says. Shop for clothing at local boutiques, browse the home goods stores or find something fun at the Chicatolia Artisan Collective. Residents can start the day at one of the many coffee shops or bakeries along the street, like Kopi Café with its breakfast sandwiches and bohemian décor. There are also plenty of sit-down places for a heavier meal. Piaatto Pronto is an Italian deli serving sandwiches, while Svea Restaurant is known for its meatballs and lingonberry jam. Explore Andersonville’s nightlife by hitting up the Chicago Magic Lounge. This speakeasy-theater hybrid is a great place to grab a craft cocktail and watch dazzling acts. It’s also close to the ever-popular Hopleaf, which boasts Belgian-inspired beer and food. True to Andersonville’s eclectic personality, there are unique grocery stores all over. City Olive sells gourmet spices and Edgewater Produce has fresh fruits and vegetables. There are also name-brand restaurants and a Jewel-Osco for those who want to keep to the classics.
You can find many boutique shops along Clark Street.

Andersonville’s range of residential properties
Andersonville is filled with walkable neighborhoods that have sidewalks and unique housing options. Nineteenth-century brick row houses line the streets, costing anywhere between $900,000 and $1.5 million. These grand houses feature the high ceilings and pointed roofs that come with Victorian architecture. However, the neighborhood’s quintessential home style is the Greystone townhouse. These limestone buildings convey a castle-like quality to the eye, range from 2,000 to 4,500 square feet and cost between $630,000 to $1.6 million. Since Andersonville is densely built, homebuyers will also find condominiums and multi-unit apartment buildings next to each other. There are older properties with a brick structure and luxurious new builds, all for $650,000 to $925,000.
Modern Apartment complexes with street parking are newly available in Andersonville.

A hotspot for community events
Andersonville hosts around 20 events a year, keeping its residents entertained. “This used to be a Swedish neighborhood originally, so they have a cute emphasis on Nordic traditions with all of our events,” Whiteside says. The Midsommarfest occurs in June and celebrates Swedish culture through musical acts, international foods, artisan vendors and traditional flower crowns. In late July, the Chamber of Commerce hosts a Summer Sidewalk Sale highlighting local businesses. Cold weather brings the Andersonville Winter Market and Viking Pub Crawl. Whiteside continues, “There are a lot of block clubs that get together in their own communities to enhance the neighborhood experience. I happen to be a member of a really old block club in a beautiful residential area, and we have an annual Harvest Moon Festival that has hayrides and pie-baking contests.” In December, people will also gather at the Swedish American Museum to celebrate the Saint Lucia Festival of the Lights and go caroling.
The Andersonville Insidewalk Sale brings people indoors for great discounts at local shops.

When it comes to outdoor recreation, Andersonville has four small playlots with jungle gyms for children to explore, including Mellin Playlot Park. “Within the Andersonville area, you can walk in any two-to-three-blocks direction and find a playlot or larger park,” Whiteside says. A community garden lets residents get their hands dirty from planting vegetables and maintaining the gingko trees. There’s also the Rosehill Cemetery, located on the northwest border of the neighborhood, where residents can walk the trails of the sprawling green space and see Victorian monuments and statues. Additionally, only 1.5 miles east, Foster Beach along Lake Michigan is known for being one of the lakefront’s quieter sandy beaches for swimming and sunbathing. There’s a beach house with concessions that makes it a popular area for volleyball players and picnickers.
