Edgewater is a lakefront neighborhood on Chicago's North Side. A community with beachside high-rises to homes on tree-lined streets
In Edgewater, there are a number of condo buildings. Lakefront high-rises along Sheridan Road might have amenities like outdoor pools and 24-hour door staff. Farther west, vintage courtyard buildings on tree-lined streets have features like hardwood floors, crown molding and landscaped common areas. Condo prices can go from around $90,000 to the upper $800,000s. Some luxury penthouse units have sold for between $900,000 and $1 million. “There are high-rise condos along Sheridan Road and on the beach, but as you move inland it’s more of a mix of single-family homes, two-flats and three-flats,” says Stephen Northey, a licensed real estate broker with Compass and an Edgewater resident since 2005. Prices for these homes can range from the mid-$300,000s to around $1.7 million.

Spending time near Lake Michigan and in Edgewater parks
Being so close to Lake Michigan, residents usually spend time on the shore. "All the locals walk there in the summer, and there’s a bike path along the lakefront that goes all the way down the shoreline to Indiana,” Northey says. Kathy Osterman Beach, known locally as Hollywood Beach, has a laid-back atmosphere with room for swimming and paddleboarding, along with volleyball courts on the sandy shore. During the summer, you can stop by concession stands and rent chairs and umbrellas. Edgewater also has traditional parks, like Berger (Albert) Park, which covers nearly 4 acres and centers on two historic landmark mansions that now host performances and concerts. The park also has a modern playground and wide-open views of the water.

Edgewater residents have options when it comes to shopping and dining
Edgewater has a number of restaurants and cafes spread across the area. “The restaurants are inventive," Northey says. "Big Jones does Southern comfort food with a healthy twist in Andersonville. [There are] so many great little African restaurants on Broadway, and in Little India on Devon [Avenue].” There are plenty of options, and some of the more popular spots are:
Loaves and Witches, a themed coffee shop serving specialty drinks, vegan and gluten-free pastries, and offering tarot readings
The Waterfront Cafe, a seasonal open-air cafe in Berger Park with views of Lake Michigan that serves items like lobster rolls
Blowfish, a contemporary sushi and ramen restaurant with creative bowls and a cocktail menu
In addition to restaurants, Edgewater has a host of grocery stores and local shops. You can browse the selection at Broadway Antique Market or see available vendors at Andersonville Galleria. For everyday needs, there are grocery stores like Whole Foods Market and Patel Brothers.
Senn High School has extracurricular activities and clubs that Edgewater students can join.
Public, private and university schools serve the community
Edgewater is part of the Chicago Public Schools district, and the neighborhood has multiple options. Helen C. Peirce School of International Studies, rated B-plus by Niche, offers International Baccalaureate programs for all grade levels. Students might attend the B-rated Senn High School, which has a major studies program where students can focus on topics like journalism and health science. Private options include Sacred Heart Schools, which has an A-plus rating. Loyola University has a campus in the northeastern corner of the neighborhood, along Lake Michigan. It's one of the largest Catholic universities in the country.
Multiple transit options make it easy to get downtown from Edgewater
Commuting to downtown Chicago is a breeze in Edgewater. “It’s right on the L line and has easy access to the expressway,” says Northey. Chicago Transit Authority's Red Line train provides 24/7 service with stops at Bryn Mawr, Thorndale and Granville, connecting riders directly to downtown. CTA bus routes add further coverage across the area. Drivers go about 10 miles down Lake Shore Drive toward the city center. The trip can take about 30 minutes with some traffic. The Chicago Lakefront Trail is nearby for bike commuting, and the city continues to expand local bike lanes.

Annual festivals and markets give residents time to catch up
People may come to Edgewater to relax by the water, but this isn't a sleepy waterside community. “There are always block parties in the summer,” Northey says. “Three or four streets will be blocked off for neighborhood block parties, and people from other blocks will come over and be part of it; everyone is welcome.” You can catch up with neighbors during:

I loved the diversity of the community and found it to be a cultural diaspora. Over the years, it has become more gentrified and parking can be a challenge. Public transportation is very realiable. People should definitely walk around to get a feel for it, you will be surprised what this community can offer.

Edgewater location is where I dream to live for long time. The neighborhood is really amazing and so many entertainments are happened all the time. So much fun to be there but one think is that I can complain is rent so high and tax as well but except those it would be the best livable location in Chicago.
