The residential blocks here comprise of rows of many condo, townhouse and multi-unit buildings, a number of which can date back to near the turn of the 20th Century. There are also detached single-family homes in the mix. Many homes here exhibit the distinct workers cottage features common in Chicago. Workers cottages are typically long and narrow and have a front-gabled roof facing the street. Additional features include stairways leading up to a front door that is not centrally placed and the home itself sitting atop a raised basement. Brick exteriors are also common for many buildings. Price points for condos can go from the upper $100,000s for a unit under 1,000 square feet to the upper $200,000s for one that’s over 1,200 square feet. There are new three-bedroom townhouses in modern contemporary buildings that can go for around $700,000. Single-family homes can go from around $420,000 to just under $700,000, with size playing some factor. Then, there are multi-unit buildings that can go from $500,000 to $1 million, with ones closer to Chinatown found in the upper end of that range. The neighborhood’s main destination for recreation is Armour Square Park, a nearly 9-acre space located right along West 33rd Street. The park, which opened in 1905, was designed by the renowned Daniel H. Burnham and the Olmsted Brothers. It’s home to a fieldhouse that features a fitness center, two gyms and an auditorium. The park’s outside amenities include junior and senior baseball fields, tennis courts, a playground and an outdoor pool. Additionally, the park hosts after-school programs throughout the year, as well as community events like egg hunts, holiday celebrations and a Movies in the Park series.James Ward Elementary’s technology, engineering activities
Schools that serve Armour Square include James Ward Elementary School, Hendricks Community Academy and Air Force Academy High School, all of which received grades of C or higher from ratings site Niche. There’s also a private option with St. Jerome Catholic School, which received an A-plus from Niche and serves students from pre-kindergarten to eighth grade. Originally built in the 1870s, James Ward Elementary provides material in multiple languages, including Chinese, to address its highly diverse student population and community. The schools hosts a number of events throughout the year, including S.T.E.A.M night in March. Residents can easily get to Chicago White Sox games. The club’s home, Guaranteed Rate Field, is located on the southern end of Armour Square. The neighborhood also hosts the annual Chinatown Summer Fair on its north end, considered one of the most ethnically unique outdoor events in both the city and the entire Midwest. Free to attend, the event typically draws more than 40,000 people and takes place in July. Residents can also enjoy the Chinatown Lunar New Year Parade in February.Access to L stops
A number of rail stops serve Armour Square. The L stops at the Sox-35th station right between Interstate 90 and farther north at the Cermak-Chinatown station. The Metra, which services greater Chicagoland, also has a stop near the Sox-35th station. Then, the neighborhood has several Chicago Transit Authority bus stops. I-90 helps provide a connection to the Chicago Loop, which is about 4 miles north of the neighborhood. As far as airports, Armour Square is closer to Chicago Midway International Airport, which is located about 9 miles to the west. Although Chinatown is an obvious destination for dining, there are many options throughout Armour Square. Franco’s Ristorante on West 31st Street is a neighborhood stable that serves traditional Italian pasta and meat entrees. Going a little farther north, right along South Wentworth Avenue is the New Furama Restaurant, which serves dim sum and traditional Chinese fare in a setting spruced up with some traditional decor. Then in Chinatown, many options can be found along South Wentworth and South Archer avenues. Favorites include the Strings Ramen for both rice and noodle bowls and the Evergreen Restaurant for Cantonese specialties. Ume Tea and Uni Uni are a few of the places that serve the popular bubble tea beverage. Visitors to this part of the community can also visit Chinatown Square, a two-story outdoor mall. Unique grocery shopping options within the community include the Starlight Market on South Wentworth. Chain options include a Cermak Fresh Market in Bridgeport west of Armour of Square and a Jewel-Osco east in Lake Meadows.
