Home to a diverse community and a vibrant local restaurant scene
The village of Avondale began growing at the turn of the 20th century, and thanks to the North Branch Chicago River, which borders Avondale to the east, a number of factories and industries were introduced to the area. The late 1980s welcomed the community’s first Latin settlement, followed by droves of Eastern European immigrants who came to the area following the end of communism a few years later. This led to Avondale receiving its nickname “where Eastern Europe meets Latin America.” As a result, the community has become a comfortable hub for various cultural groups from around the world. Though redevelopment over the last decade has pushed some long-time residents out of the neighborhood, locals aim to maintain its unique feel by supporting long-time businesses. “The community is actively working to preserve the neighborhood’s origins,” says Samantha Wren, former resident and Realtor with Fulton Grace Realty. “When I lived there, I would see people stopping into new bakeries for artisanal bread, then walk to pick up sausage from one of the old Polish Markets.”
After the Great Chicago Fire, Avondale played a key role in rebuilding the city.

Locals have an array of dining choices, including Kurowski Sausage Shop, where customers can choose from a selection of sausages and shop for various Eastern European groceries. Meanwhile, traditional Puerto Rican flavors are explored at Jibaritos Y Mas, a casual walk-up joint. Its wave of new restaurants includes spots like Avondale Bowl off North Milwaukee Avenue. “It’s a hipster vibe that spins records while you bowl,” says Wren. “People even bring in pizza from down the street.” When it’s time to shop, groceries can be picked up from Tony’s Fresh Market or at a number of smaller markets like International Foods Inc, while a Walmart Supercenter serves the area for any retail needs.
The homes of Avondale
Thanks to its established sidewalks, it’s not uncommon to see a neighbor going for a walk through the community. The community’s car-lined streets run parallel to densely placed homes, many of which feature walk-up front doors and porches. The homes present a wide array of architectural styles, from Cape Cods and ranch styles to A-frame two-flat styles, all of which were built throughout the 20th century. Alongside this are newly constructed neo-classical, detached town home-style houses with farmhouse-inspired white exteriors and black metal windows. These free-standing homes range in price from $350,000 to $1.3 million for larger, recently built homes. Also available are condos and town homes blending old Queen Anne-inspired builds with ultra-modern glass-front units. These range in price from $200,000 to $650,000, depending on size and condition.

Festival Cubano
Residents and locals from around the area gather at Riis Park yearly for the Festival Cubano. Those in attendance celebrate Cuba and Latin America as a whole through cultural music and performances, an array of food vendors and a carnival to catch thrills. Another staple of the area is St. Hyacinth Basilica’s annual Parish Carnival, also home to carnival rides, offering an exploration of Polish foods like sausage, bigos and potato pancakes.

Pick-up games at Kosciuzko Park
Though Avondale Neighborhood Park is relatively small, residents flock to its outdoor pool in the summertime to cool off. At the same time, its spacious playgrounds and open green space for picnics are appreciated year-round. To the south, on the other side of West Diversey Avenue, sits Kosciuszko Park, a popular spot thanks to its turf field for pick-up soccer games and ADA-accessible playgrounds.
