Working class roots, but new seeds are planted
Bridgeport’s north side borders the Chicago River, and that’s where the neighborhood’s nautical name derives from. Just on the other side of the river is South Pilsen, an increasingly hip destination, and to the east is Dearborn, another area being revitalized. Surrounding trends feed into Bridgeport, bringing fresh life to this neighborhood with working class roots. “Mariano’s is the local grocer, and the type of trend you’ll see here is people shopping for groceries but stopping for a glass of wine, hanging out,” says Realtor Grigory Pekarsky, co-founder of Vesta Preferred Realty. “It’s that kind of relaxed experience, like an alternative to Whole Foods.” But the modest housing stock is a reminder of Bridgeport’s humble beginnings, and homebuyers especially appreciate how well it has been maintained.

Cottages, condos and townhouses
Perhaps the most common type of house seen in Bridgeport is the workers cottage, a style that’s exclusive to Chicago’s blue-collar neighborhoods. Built in the early 19th century, these can be made of brick, vinyl or wood. But more importantly they resemble a two-story bungalow with a stoop leading up to the front door above a raised basement. At the start of the market, comparatively smaller versions at 900 square feet can go for $300,000. Doubling the square footage can bring that price to the mid $400,000s. There are newer styles as well, in keeping with Bridgeport’s growth. “Low rise condominiums are a style you’ll see in the area,” says Realtor Wendy Lee, who has decades of experience in the Chicago market and is with EXIT Realty. “This isn’t a neighborhood defined by high rises. You will see newer townhouses, though.” Low rise units can start around $270,000, while townhouses can start in the mid $500,000s.

A melting pot of flavors
The dining scene in Bridgeport evokes a melting pot atmosphere. Familiar cuisines like Italian and Chinese are available, but so are unexpected mash ups, like Kimski, a Korean-Polish restaurant. Coffee shops, pubs and pizza places are scattered throughout the neighborhood, too, so residents can grab convenient, reliable eats. For big-box grocery shopping, there are a couple options: a Mariano’s sits next to Bubbly Creek, while a Cermak Fresh Market is parked next to Palmisano park.

Small parks and big baseball experiences
Several small parks are dotted across Bridgeport, offering a bit of respite within reach of most residents. But there are a couple of big community hotspots, too. Palmisano Nature Park on the north side, just below Interstate 55, is one of those. A fishing pond and wetlands are standout features, but it’s an active place as well, with trails, athletic facilities and views. Armour Square Park on the east end feels a little bit more traditional, with a playground, fieldhouse and seasonal events, like an Easter egg hunt. Of course, the area is popular for another reason: next to the park is Guaranteed Rate Field, home of the Chicago White Sox.

Interstate amenities
Transportation amenities are another key perk while living in Bridgeport. Interstate 90 runs along the east side, eventually intersecting with Interstate 55 on the north side. Downtown Chicago is about 5 miles north, making for a drive that’s a little less than 15 minutes. Metra train stops line these corridors. For example, the Halsted stop is near I-55 and Palmisano Park, but meanwhile residents can pick up the Rock Island line near the Sox stadium, along I-90. Buses run on Halsted Street and most of the eatery-lined thoroughfares it intersects with, like 31st Street, 35th Street and so on.
Bridgeport is minutes to downtown Chicago and next to I55 and I90 interchange.
The Metra stops at 35th street and is only a few minutes to Chicago from Bridgeport.
