Bucktown has a chic vibe and an active shopping and dining scene

If you're looking for great restaurants and shopping, there are plenty of neighborhoods to choose from on the West Side of Chicago. Bucktown is a popular choice, bringing an upscale feel, fine dining and more expensive homes than some of its eclectic and quirky neighbors like Logan Square and Wicker Park. The neighborhood's location on Milwaukee Avenue puts it right on the Blue Line and next to the interstate, making for a quick downtown commute.

Bucktown's local restaurants and boutiques

Bucktown is known for its upscale boutiques and restaurants, many of them on Milwaukee Avenue and Damen Avenue. “If you want to buy an expensive winter jacket and handbag, you go to Bucktown,” says broker Lucas Blahnik with Christie’s International Real Estate. “If you want homemade jewelry or to get something tattooed, you go to Logan Square.” Bucktown boutiques and clothing stores like Virtu and KHOI help make the area a shopping destination, just a quick stroll from homes in the area. Foodie favorites include:

  • Irazu Costa Rican Restaurant, a popular Milwaukee Avenue choice with windows that open in the summer
  • Ipsento 606, a cafe and coffee shop in the morning that turns into a diner spot with good cocktails in the evening
  • Le Bouchon, a French bistro with a colorful atmosphere and menu items like escargot and steak frites
Most of Bucktown is located below Interstate 90/94, but the other side of the highway, between the interstate and the Chicago River, is full of shopping centers and big-box stores, plus several grocery stores. The highway separation allows you to stay close to big-box shopping while maintaining the quieter local atmosphere in the neighborhood.

A mix of housing options are available in Bucktown

Homes are close together in Bucktown, blending historic single-family homes, condos and apartment complexes. “When they were building Bucktown, they were building smaller lots, so they are a little narrower and shallower,” Blahnik says. “The streets feel more quaint and cozier.” Single-family homes are a mix of workers’ cottages, Victorians and new construction. “There are really cool buildings with historic taverns and storefronts on the corners,” Blahnik says. “You have people who have converted them into homes, and they’re a big wish-list item for people living in Chicago.” Brick two-flat condos and townhomes are also common, with a mix of older and contemporary styles. Mid-rise condo complexes come with balconies for each unit. Street parking can sometimes be tricky, but single-family homes have detached garages, and some complexes have back parking lots.
