Neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois

From Condos to Chicago bungalows
Dunning is primarily a residential area, but it’s almost an even divide among single-family homes, apartments and condos. Most houses are south of Irving Park Road, and condos are along the northwest end towards Wilbur Wright College. Pre-1940s Chicago-style bungalows and Cape Cods make up the bulk of the architecture. Here and there are sprinkles of Georgian bricks and modern new construction. Because houses are closer together, often there are smaller lot spaces, but most homes have a front lawn and backyard with a detached garage. Houses under 1,200 can cost around $200,000 to $350,000. Homes over 1,200 square feet have prices between $330,000 to $600,000. New constructions are over $700,000. There are several condo subdivisions, but the most popular is Glenlake. Prices vary from $195,000 to $320,000.Packed neighborhood parks
Shabbona Park offers many amenities within its 19-acre park. On the outside, residents unleash their athletic skills at the numerous softball and baseball fields and tennis courts. The playground and spray area are often a major draw for neighborhood children. The park’s fieldhouse includes a fitness center, gymnasium and indoor swimming pool, which is open most of the year. Merrimac Park is a smaller park on the east side. Residents can participate in various sports and fitness programs, and kids often enjoy the playground space. The Dunning-Read Natural Area connects residents with nature through the 0.8-mile hiking trail, whereas anglers usually head to Schiller Woods, where there’s a large pond.Home to Wilbur Wright College
Students can start their education at Bridge Elementary, which earned a B grade from Niche. Kindergarten through eighth-grade students can participate in several after-school activities, including drama and athletics. High school can be completed at the Steinmetz College Prep. The C-rated school has nearly 30 after-school clubs for student participation. Students looking to stay local post-graduate can continue their education at Wilbur Wright College. The city college offers several majors for associate degrees, free certifications and courses.
Fun activities two miles away
Ridgemoor Country Club is adjacent to Dunning on the north end. The private club holds an 18-hole course along with a heated swimming pool and tennis courts. Residents can catch the latest in Hollywood, 2 miles away at the AMC Theaters.
Central to multiple interstates
Dunning is central between three major interstates, 294, 90 and 290. Those who want to get downtown Chicago can utilize I-90 and I-290, both of which are 15-mile drives. Interstate 294 travels north and south to other Chicago suburbs, including Des Plaines and Elmhurst. Travelers needing flights can access Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, which is 7 miles away. From there, there are nonstop flights to 160 cities. Commuters are 2 miles from Elmwood Park and Mont Clare Metra stops, which goes right to Chicago’s Union Station. Other transportation options include the many bus stops on Irving Park Road, Harlem Ave and Wilbur Wright College.
Home to Eli's Cheesecake
Some of Chicago’s best restaurants are in Dunning, notably Eli’s Cheesecake Company. The historic shop along Forest Preserve Ave is known as the birthplace of Chicago-style cheesecake, which involves baked cream cheese with a soft and creamy inside and a shortbread-style crust. Besides their famous cakes, locals enjoy their cookies, pies and baked goods. BarTucci Homemade Italian Food specializes in fresh pasta and homemade focaccia. Dunning Pour House is the neighborhood’s go-to for a laid-back night with beers and spirits paired with pub-style mains and appetizers. Residents head to Harlem Ave for most shopping, notably Harlem Irving Plaza. Here, residents can shop for essentials and clothing from over 100 stores, including Hobby Lobby, Target and Loft Outlet. Just next door is the Norridge Commons, which contains the Amazon Fresh Grocery Store, Michaels, and Ulta Beauty.
