East Village is the eastern part of Chicago's West Town
Even though it's 3.6 miles west of downtown Chicago, East Village is on the eastern portion of Chicago’s West Town, a collection of living and dining on the west side of I-90. Only nine by six blocks, East Village is primarily residential, with low-rise condos lining its streets. Still, residents are also within walking distance of a diverse range of restaurants and community gardens and parks. With downtown Chicago and its attractions just on the other side of the Interstate, those craving more to do can take the city’s public transportation the short distance to city parks and beaches.

Most of East Village’s restaurants are along its busier streets, like Augusta Boulevard and Division Street. Kasama is a modern Filipino bakery and restaurant and the first Filipino restaurant in the world to receive a Michelin Star. While people come from all over to taste their ube-filled Basque cakes, locals know to order ahead online to skip the line that stretches down the street. At Tortello, people can order fresh pasta, like the tortelli di burrata, for dining in or dried to cook at home. Beatnik West Town serves Mediterranean and Moroccan cuisine in a Bohemian-styled setting. Grocery stores are within a mile of East Village with a Mariano’s along Chicago Avenue just 0.6 miles away and a Jewel-Osco about 0.8 miles north in Wicker Park Commons.

West Town Art Walk highlights this portion of Chicago’s growing arts scene with walking tours and special deals through nearby galleries. Further, people can also enjoy city happenings. “Grant Park has a summer schedule,” says Chicago native Stephanie Mason, real estate manager with 5th Group Realty and Management. “Yoga on Saturday mornings, Sunday gospel—things people don’t fly in for, but are events for just us locals.”

Low-rise Italianate and contemporary condos
East Village’s low-rise condo complexes feature Italianate and Chicago Greystones mixed with more contemporary and minimalistic brick buildings. Trees create a canopy of leaves over the streets and sidewalks. Iron fences often encase front gardens and stoops, locked so only residents and administrators can access the front landing. With street parking dominating the streets, walkability is an important factor here, so residents don’t lose their spots while out at the park or getting a bite to eat. These condos typically list between $550,000 and $750,000, though monthly condo fees can range anywhere from $200 to $400 per month.
