Community pride and renovation efforts shape Englewood’s future
An urban community in south side Chicago, Englewood offers its residents city living near local parks, amenities and public schools. While the neighborhood has experienced its share of issues in recent years, it’s also incredibly resilient and has several community advocacy groups that are striving to improve the area.
Realtor April Troope of Tadd Realty, who has worked in Chicago’s south side for nearly 30 years, says the neighborhood is transforming as investors and some new homeowners have begun buying and updating homes more quickly than in the past. “We’ve been renovating our properties to provide better housing here. We’re going block by block to improve it as much as we can,” Troope says. “People should not sleep on Englewood. It’s coming back. It’s a beautiful community.” Local advocacy organizations like The Englewood Arts Collective and the Residents Association of Greater Englewood are also helping to revitalize the area.
Historic homes are priced below the city average
Englewood offers a mix of architecture primarily built in the early 1900s, including many brick and stone rowhomes, bungalows, Craftsman homes and some multifamily buildings. You might also see some unique and historic architecture in the neighborhood, like the Yale Building, a restored Romanesque apartment building that traces its origin to the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893. Some of the homes in this area have been restored, renovated and upgraded with modern amenities, while others may need significant improvements. Prices can range from as little as $35,000 for homes that need repairs, while updated homes can cost around $300,000, putting the neighborhood below the city’s median home price of $335,000.
Neighborhood parks feature pools, trails and a fitness center
If you live in Englewood, you’re almost certain to be within a short walk or drive from a local park. Stretch your legs at Ogden Park, a centrally located green space and the largest park in the neighborhood. It’s wide-open fields, wildlife garden, walking trails, colorful playground, picnic areas, benches and tennis courts are where the community gathers throughout the day. It’s also home to the Ogden Park Pool, where you can go for a swim on a simmering summer afternoon. Hamilton Park, at the southeast corner of the neighborhood, is a little smaller but offers a similar array of amenities to enjoy. You're also close to the historic Sherman Park, a lush, 60-acre public park designed by John and Frederick Olmsted, the minds behind some of America's most iconic parks. It also includes an indoor fitness center for those who want some exercise during the winter months.
International Baccalaureate education at Bogan High School
Young students in the neighborhood can attend elementary schools like Bass Elementary and Middle School, which holds a C-minus rating from Niche. It received a Thrive Award from the nonprofit GreatSchools in 2021, an award given to schools that demonstrate positive outcomes for learning, test scores and college preparation. Upperclassmen can attend nearby Bogan High School, a public magnet school with a C rating from Niche. Students with an interest in studying other cultures will fit right in at Bogan High — it offers an International Baccalaureate program with a rigorous curriculum. Englewood is also home to Kennedy-King College, a public community college with around 12,000 students.
Local businesses and national chains share retail space
For your groceries and other everyday essentials, you can stop by the shopping center at 63rd Street and Halsted Street. There, you’ll find grocers like Aldi and Save A Lot and chain restaurants like Starbucks and Wingstop. Independent shops and restaurants are starting to pop up in Englewood as well, including plans for a new restaurant development on 63rd Street that will house two upstart eateries, Pass the Peas and Ellie’s Urban Grill. “We’ve got a lot of small businesses coming in. It’s really inspiring for our young people to see what success looks like in their own neighborhood,” Troope says.
Easy access to highways and public transit into downtown
For those who need to commute downtown Chicago, 9 miles away, you can hop on Interstate 90. There’s also a metro train station at the corner of Ashland and 63rd Street and numerous bus stops throughout the area for those who prefer public transportation.
GreatSchools:
The GreatSchools Rating helps parents compare schools within a state based on a variety of school quality indicators and provides a helpful picture of how effectively each school serves all of its students. Ratings are on a scale of 1 (below average) to 10 (above average) and can include test scores, college readiness, academic progress, advanced courses, equity, discipline and attendance data. We also advise parents to visit schools, consider other information on school performance and programs, and consider family needs as part of the school selection process.
