Gatherings in Grand Crossing Park
The community’s namesake park is a hub for local gatherings, such as periodic Drum Circle nights and evening movies on the lawn. Residents also enjoy meeting with friends for a game of cards or letting the little ones run free on its padded playground. Less than a mile northeast sits Stony Island Arts Bank, which displays archived and contemporary art. They feature curated exhibits by local artists and run the Art Banks Cinema, a weekly free screening and discussion of films made by and for Black audiences. A few blocks west sits the Oak Woods Cemetery, where visitors enjoy peaceful walks while visiting the graves of greats like Jesse Owens and Ida B. Wells and several others.Commuting from Grand Crossing
Much of the community uses public transportation for daily commutes to work. And though only 2 miles in length from north to south, Grand Crossing is home to four Metra stops, each a part of the red line. These lead into Chicago, making for 35-minute trips into downtown, which is also accessed along a 10-mile drive via the I-94 Expressway. Meanwhile, flights at Chicago Midway International Airport sit 9.1 miles away via East Marquette Road, and visits to South Shore Hospital are a short 2-mile drive along East 76th Street. Even closer to home is The University of Chicago’s Campus, which sits 1.2 miles north along South Ellis Avenue.Grand Crossing's homes
From its sidewalks, it’s easy to recognize that the neighborhood is part of Chicago’s “Bungalow Belt,” as this style makes up most of the community. Alongside these are ranch and worker’s cottage-style homes, also built from the late 1800s through the 20th century, as well as brick-clad condo buildings. Though green spaces are absent throughout, mature white oak trees are dotted along streets, sitting within grassy medians, providing a bit of green in the somewhat industrial area. Prices for homes here are less than half the Chicago Metro Area’s average, a big pull for potential homebuyers. “It may be a good opportunity for homeowners to grow alongside the community and its market,” explains Doyle. It’s adjacent to the up-and-coming Woodlawn to the north, which U of C is heavily invested in, and will eventually overflow into the Grand Crossing area.” Home prices here range from $50,000 for homes in need of renovation to just below $400,000 for a larger, recently redone house.
Community events at Emil G. Hirsch Metropolitan High School
Students prekindergarten through 8th grade can attend Arthur R. Ashe Elementary School, which maintains a C-minus rating on Niche, before heading to Emil G. Hirsch Metropolitan High School. The home of the Huskies has a C-minus rating as well and holds several events for students and families throughout the year, including its Community Feeding & Giveaway holiday event. Those in attendance are welcomed with free food, music and games, get to take family snapshots and partake in toy and winter coat giveaways.
C.H.A.M.P.S. youth programming
Grand Crossing has a 9 out of 10 for homicide, as well as a 7 out of 10 for both assault with a weapon and robbery, compared to the national average of 4 for each of these categories. Several organizations and local non-profits have worked to lower these numbers. For example, C.H.A.M.P.S., Culturally Helping And Making Positive Success, is a program that mentors young Black and Brown men on the city’s southside, including access to mental health support. Similarly, RPSA Youth Development programming provides an array of opportunities for the youth, while Habitat Chicago’s Neighborhood Grants Initiative is helping homeowners with minor repairs and, in return, increasing both home and community pride.
Brown Sugar Bakery sweets
For many, weekend mornings begin with southern-inspired baked goods from Brown Sugar Bakery, just ten blocks east, known for its cupcakes and caramel cake. Closer to home are the fresh subs and salads at The Wrap Bar on South Cottage Grove Avenue, also home to Dat Donut, a family-owned spot that’s served the area since 1994. For shopping, Jewel-Osco, K&G Fashion and Dollar General are located in the northeast corner, while Walgreens and local spots like Le Club Boutique sit in the southwest corner.
