Home to community-focused residents and plenty of public transportation
Grand Crossing is a southside Chicago neighborhood bordered by Lake Michigan a few miles to the east and Oak Woods Cemetery directly north. Once a busy railway hub in the 1800s, the community is now a prime location for public transportation access and is near Chicago-based cultural hotspots. It is also home to community-focused residents looking to bring life into the somewhat industrial pocket. “What’s unique is its industrial feel juxtaposed by a residential feel, which is now starting to work together,” shares Yanira Doyle, Realtor with The Doyle Way at Compass and resident of the neighboring Chatham. “It’s a beautiful thing to see an old warehouse be made into a daycare for the youth.”

Gatherings in Grand Crossing Park
The community’s namesake park is a hub for local gatherings, such as periodic Drum Circle nights and evening movies on the lawn. Residents also enjoy meeting with friends for a game of cards or letting the little ones run free on its padded playground. Less than a mile northeast sits Stony Island Arts Bank, which displays archived and contemporary art. They feature curated exhibits by local artists and run the Art Banks Cinema, a weekly free screening and discussion of films made by and for Black audiences. A few blocks west sits the Oak Woods Cemetery, where visitors enjoy peaceful walks while visiting the graves of greats like Jesse Owens and Ida B. Wells and several others.

Grand Crossing's homes
From its sidewalks, it’s easy to recognize that the neighborhood is part of Chicago’s “Bungalow Belt,” as this style makes up most of the community. Alongside these are ranch and worker’s cottage-style homes, also built from the late 1800s through the 20th century, as well as brick-clad condo buildings. Though green spaces are absent throughout, mature white oak trees are dotted along streets, sitting within grassy medians, providing a bit of green in the somewhat industrial area. Prices for homes here are less than half the Chicago Metro Area’s average, a big pull for potential homebuyers. “It may be a good opportunity for homeowners to grow alongside the community and its market,” explains Doyle. It’s adjacent to the up-and-coming Woodlawn to the north, which U of C is heavily invested in, and will eventually overflow into the Grand Crossing area.” Home prices here range from $50,000 for homes in need of renovation to just below $400,000 for a larger, recently redone house.

The Gary Comer Youth Center in Grand Crossing is a well recognized youth organization facility.
C.H.A.M.P.S. youth programming
Grand Crossing has a 9 out of 10 for homicide, as well as a 7 out of 10 for both assault with a weapon and robbery, compared to the national average of 4 for each of these categories. Several organizations and local non-profits have worked to lower these numbers. For example, C.H.A.M.P.S., Culturally Helping And Making Positive Success, is a program that mentors young Black and Brown men on the city’s southside, including access to mental health support. Similarly, RPSA Youth Development programming provides an array of opportunities for the youth, while Habitat Chicago’s Neighborhood Grants Initiative is helping homeowners with minor repairs and, in return, increasing both home and community pride.
