Hermosa
Urban Core Neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois
Cook County 60639, 60647

Workers' cottages reflect community's manufacturing history
Most houses in Hermosa were built before 1940. Predominant architectural styles include workers' cottages, bungalows and brick two-flats flanking sidewalk-lined streets. Yards are small and uniform, with front stoops flanked by gardens and shrubbery. Due to their historical nature, houses are ripe for renovation, with many owners opting to enhance their homes with new roofing, flooring and windows. “It’s one of the best areas for investors,” says Mira Kovacevic, a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Realty. “People appreciate the value of the homes and can make good money there if the properties are revitalized.” Prices start at $200,000 and climb to $485,000 for a house that has been fully remodeled. Multi-family units with six to eight bedrooms typically sell for $400,000 to $700,000.Multiple neighborhood parks and walks on The 606
Multiple parks scattered throughout Hermosa give locals a place to get fresh air. Kelvyn Park is the largest in the neighborhood, spanning nearly 10 acres. Parents can take their kids to the playground or splash pad to burn off some energy. A large fieldhouse has a fitness center, a gym and an auditorium. Walking paths wind through the green space, passing by basketball, volleyball and tennis courts. Hermosa Park features a playground and two walking pathways, each about a quarter mile long. Friends also meet at the park to play on the basketball and tennis courts. The 606, an elevated trail that was once a rail line, sits just outside the neighborhood’s eastern end. “It’s a really big deal in the area. People are losing their minds over the trail,” says Lori Wyatt, a broker with Real Estate Growth Partners. “The landscapers made sure they used a lot of plants native to the area along the trail. It’s very serene and feels like a garden or a wildlife preserve in the middle of the city.” The walking and running pathway stretches nearly 3 miles, ending near the lively Wicker Park neighborhood, packed with restaurants, entertainment and a bustling nightlife scene.Attending Chicago Public Schools
Chicago Public Schools serves neighborhood students. Many attend Lloyd Elementary, which receives a C-minus rating from Niche. Those who attend Lloyd Elementary will filter into Northwest Middle School, which Niche rates a C overall, before attending the C-minus Foreman High School. Another option is McAuliffe Elementary, a C-graded school that serves students in Grade K-8. North-Grand High School is the next stop for those students. The school earns a C rating from Niche and offers a career technology education program with focuses on culinary arts, engineering and health professions.Community cleanups organized by the Hermosa Neighborhood Association
The Hermosa Neighborhood Association, formed by neighbors in 2014 at a local bar, aims to keep the neighborhood in good shape and advocate for its residents. The organization's major focus is community cleanups, often held to polish up abandoned properties and plant flowers or trees around the neighborhood. Residents can also take advantage of neighborhood socials, including tours of local breweries or get-togethers at nearby restaurants.Easy access to the Metra and CTA buses
Hermosa is walkable and bike-friendly, with shared bike lines on West Armitage Avenue. Classic and electric bikes are available to rent through Divvy, the city’s bike-sharing system. The neighborhood has always been defined by and benefited from its closeness to Chicago, and the Windy City’s major employers and attractions are less than 9 miles away. Many residents depend on Chicago Transit Authority buses for commuting. Multiple stops are dotted along West Fullerton and West Armitage avenues. The Metra commuter rail also serves the neighborhood, connecting locals to the Milwaukee District/North Line. Chicago O’Hare International Airport sits about 12 miles east of the neighborhood, reachable by taking West Fullerton Avenue.A taste of Venezuela at Rica Arepa
West Fullerton and West Armitage avenues are lifelines for the neighborhood’s retail and restaurant scene. Hermosa has a notable selection of Latin cuisine and specialty eateries. Rica Arepa is a husband-and-wife-owned Venezuelan restaurant that serves authentic dishes like pabellon criollo, which comes with shredded beef, rice, plantains and black beans. There’s also a gated outdoor patio adorned with string lights where diners frequently opt to enjoy their meal. The aroma of freshly baked bread and pastries greets customers at Guadalajara Bakery. The grab-and-go spot is also a local favorite for its breakfast sandwiches. A tasting room now occupies the space once held by the Schwinn bicycle factory. Right Bee Cider, situated along Kostner Avenue, has an on-site taproom and cidery. Locals can sip on one of the eight in-house ciders or pick up a 12-pack to take home. For convenient shopping, big-box retailers like Burlington and Walmart are tucked in the neighborhood’s southern end.
