Jackson Park Highlands has lakeside parks and a tight-knit community
Nestled against an expansive lakeside park, the Jackson Park Highlands neighborhood is home to quiet, elm-lined streets and beautifully manicured front lawns. Construction in the neighborhood began in 1905, with developers planning on making a selection of model homes overlooking Jackson Park. By the 1920s, it was one of only three model neighborhoods in Chicago. “It’s a lovely area with larger homes,” says local resident and Realtor Derek Walvoord. “And the community is super tight-knit. Locals will host what we call ‘flamingo Friday’s’ where neighbors can come over to enjoy a cocktail at the end of the work week.”
Spacious homes and privacy on Chicago’s South Side
Homes in Jackson Park Highlands were largely built in the early 20th century, with common styles including American foursquare homes, Colonial Revivals, Tudors and prairie style builds. Homes in the area differ from those in surrounding neighborhoods due to the strict property guidelines put in place when the area was first developed. In the 1920s, it was required for homes in the neighborhood to have a minimum of 50-foot-wide front lots, and a minimum of 30 feet between the front of the home to the property line. These standards provide the residents of Jackson Park Highlands with a degree of privacy and a feeling of separation from Chicago’s busy city center, located nine miles to the north. The neighborhood’s home prices tend to be higher than those in surrounding areas, with prices ranging from $250,000 fixer-uppers to $900,000 elegant, French-inspired homes.
A walkable haven for boaters, golfers and beachgoers
Living in Jackson Park Highlands means that parklands and lakefront beaches are within walking distance from your doorstep. Bordering the neighborhood to the north is the expansive Jackson Park. Here, you’ll find an abundance of recreational offerings and sports facilities, including soccer fields, baseball diamonds, tennis courts and the Jackson Park Golf Course. Boat owners can store their power boats at one of Jackson Park’s harbors or use the boat launch for a day out on the lake. You’ll also find miles of paved trails that will take you over the park’s lagoon and through its beautifully maintained Japanese garden. On a warm summer day, residents can be found flocking to South Shore Beach and 63rd Street Beach to relax on the sand or cool off in the refreshing waters of Lake Michigan.
Quiet living with a direct line to the Loop
Many residents of Jackson Park Highlands travel to downtown Chicago for work, and proximity to the Bryn Mawr train station allows for an easy commute. Downtown is less than 10 miles away.
Neighborhood school honors a pioneer of Chicago’s kindergarten system
Local parents can send their young learners to one of the numerous nearby schools. On Merrill Avenue, you’ll find O’Keeffe School of Excellence. The school has served the South Shore area since 1925, and is named for Isabelle C. O’Keeffe, an educator and advocate for the founding of the kindergarten system throughout Chicago schools.
Barbecue, pizza and groceries all within a short stroll
Walking along 71st Street, which serves as the neighborhood’s southern boundary, will take you past numerous local restaurants and convenient amenities. Visit Slab Barbecue to savor delectable dishes like St. Louis Ribs, turkey legs, burgers and fried wings, alongside classic southern sides from baked beans to coleslaw. Across the street, you’ll find Italian Fiesta Pizzeria, which has been serving the community since the 1940s with classic thin crust slices, pasta dishes and hot Italian subs. After grabbing a bite to eat, you can pick up your groceries and other day-to-day essentials at Local Market Foods.
