Jefferson Park blends residential life and commuting options

Jefferson Park draws buyers who want a single-family home and options for commuting downtown, all in one area. This Chicago neighborhood is home to one of the region's busiest transit hubs, with interstates and rail lines that reach downtown and O'Hare International Airport. Beyond the transportation, residents are part of an active community that has schools in the area and annual events that celebrate local businesses.

Single-family homes and condos with lower prices than other areas

Jefferson Park features classic bungalows with original woodwork, alongside Tudor and Colonial Revival-style homes. While most of the area is full of single-family homes, you'll also see many brick condo buildings. Condo units can range in price from the mid-$100,000s to almost $500,000, while single-family properties can go in the upper $200,000s to around $1.3 million, depending on the condition. “Compared to other parts of the city where you have to buy a condo, over here you can buy a single-family home,” says Jefferson Park resident and Realtor Edith Schell with Christie’s International Real Estate. “Most houses have a detached garage and a small yard, so you do feel like you have your own little private spot."

  • El Asadero Colombiano, a place to order items like arepas and empanadas
  • Smakosz Restaurant, a Polish restaurant with homestyle dishes that has been in the area since 1997
Milwaukee Avenue also has local stores, from Andy's Deli & Mikolajczyk Sausage Shop to national brands like Dollar General. Mariano's is one of the nearby grocery stores, and there are more options nearby like Target and Seafood City Supermarket.

Browsing local markets, music festivals and community gatherings

The Jefferson Park Chamber of Commerce organizes multiple events for the community to give people space to connect and support local businesses. “There’s lots of community involvement," Schell says. "Lots of block parties, lots of book clubs, lots of baseball leagues. These are things that drive the community." Some of the biggest events are:

  • Jefferson Park Sunday Market, a biweekly market from June through October
  • Chicago Italian Beef Fest, formerly Jeff Fest, is a summer arts and music festival with live bands and food vendors
  • Taste of Polonia Festival, the largest Polish festival in the country, where you can enjoy food, beer and live music

Jefferson Park has room to play, compete and relax

Jefferson (Thomas) Memorial Park is the main green space, where people visit the pool, splash pad and athletic fields. The playground has separate structures for younger and older children. For a more natural setting, Forest Glen Woods is part of the North Branch Trail System, which includes about 20 miles of paved and unpaved trails for walking, biking and cross-country skiing. The trails wind along the North Branch of the Chicago River.
