Jeffrey Manor's 1950s-era townhouses and duplexes
While worker's cottages stand strong in former industrial hotbeds like Slag Valley, Jeffrey Manor's housing stock harkens back to post-World War II Chicago. Detached ranch-style homes and townhouses line the curved streets between Merrill Avenue and Yates Avenue, which include sidewalks and modern streetlights for those headed to the nearest CTA stop. Folks here may hear a lawnmower in the early morning, since yards are abnormally spacious compared to surrounding South Side communities. Georgian-style brick homes and duplexes can be found within Jeffrey Manor's gridded portions. Many homes throughout the neighborhood have recent interior updates like new cabinets and countertops, though some streets have a higher rate of court-ordered sales where properties are sold as-is. Homes that need extensive renovations range from $50,000 to $125,000, while freshly rehabbed options range from about $120,000 to $200,000.Bradley Park renovations and walks at Byrnes Natural Area
Though some of the parks in Jeffrey Manor have fallen into disrepair, residents have several well-kept green spaces to choose from. Central to Yates Avenue is Bradley Park, renovated in 2014 as part of the five-year Chicago Plays! initiative with a playground, fieldhouse for community events, and a basketball court. Marian R. Byrnes Natural Area borders the neighborhood to the west and provides more open space than one can usually find within city limits. Early morning walkers might spot deer and other wildlife through the mist. The Pine Park playlot is a small-but-mighty playset option for those on the northern side, while Trumbull Park's playground and public swimming pool in the summer are convenient for residents living on the 100s. Rain or shine, locals can hit Skyway Lanes for bowling paired with drinks, wings and live music at Jay's Bar and Grill, the in-house restaurant.Navigating Chicago Public Schools and alternative options
Past Jeffrey Manor residents fondly remember attending Luella Elementary School on Crandon Avenue. The neighborhood grammar school still holds strong as Burnham Math & Science Academy and receives an overall C-minus from Niche, an educational review site. Gallistel Language Academy in East Side also scores a C-minus and offers half or full-day Chicago Early Learning programs for children from infancy to 5 years old. Families may also opt for cluster magnet schools like STEM-focused Warren Elementary School, which scores a C. Kids graduating eighth grade can head past Chicago State University to Harlan Community Academy High School, or head north to Bowen High School, both receiving a C-minus. Private, tuition-based options include Our Lady of Guadeloupe School for kindergarten through eighth grade and St. Francis de Sales High School, which scores a B-plus. Even more options may be on the horizon for students in the Manor; Chicago Public Schools data shows that about 56% attend a high school outside of the South Side region. Those looking beyond grade school can earn associate's degrees, career certificates and more at Olive-Harvey College, or attend Chicago State University—both less than 3 miles away from the community.Library services and popular Manor hangouts
Chicago Public Library established its Jeffrey Manor branch in 1999. Today, the institution serves several neighborhoods in the South Deering community area and hosts a full calendar of practical skill classes and kid-friendly events, including film screenings, craft nights throughout the summer, lessons on topics like computer skills and starting a small business. Meanwhile, Skyway Lanes offers Tuesday deals on bowling and hosts youth and adult leagues. Across the street from Skyway is another local hangout: East Odyssey Lounge, a no-frills spot with a small dance floor and live blues on Sundays.CTA, Metra and the Chicago Skyway
Many residents head further downtown each day for work, according to Trinette Lindsey, an agent with Keller Williams ONE Chicago who grew up on the South Side. "I would say it's probably half and half for driving and using public transit," she says. "The CTA buses are right there, and people have Metra access as well. It's also close to the Expressway so it's an easy commute within the city whether people use public transportation or drive." Downtown Chicago is about 14 miles away on Interstate 90's Chicago Skyway toll road, or on the Bishop Ford Memorial Freeway, part of Interstate 94 that curves past Pullman. Two nearby Metra stops make 24/7 trips to Millenium Station downtown. Folks can board at the South Chicago (93rd) station—about 30 minutes away by bus or on foot—or at 95th Street with Chicago State University students. CTA bus stops are also scattered throughout the community, some equipped with covered seating areas and bike racks. Medical care is within reach at Advocate Trinity Hospital, 1.5 miles north and a 20-minute bus ride away. As for longer journeys, Chicago Midway International Airport is about 15 miles away, though drivers should factor in time for heavy traffic on the expressway.Hitting Stony Island for good eats and groceries
Though the restaurants and shops that defined Jeffrey Manor in the 1950s and 60s have long since closed up shop, residents still have options for both within walking distance. "It's super close to Stony Island," Lindsey says, referring to the commercial thoroughfare at the corner of 95th Street and Stony Island Avenue. "It's not a food desert, there are grocery stores nearby and plenty of shopping and strip malls as well." Fresh Market on Jeffrey is a one-stop shop for fresh produce, meats and more established in 2023, while Jewel Osco, Dollar Tree and ALDI offer big-box alternatives. Seafood Paradise serves up takeout crab, lobster, and scallops in sturdy aluminum to keep everything warm during the trip home. Bourbon Street Birds delivers flavors straight from New Orleans under a mural paying homage to the iconic street. Residents are also close to counter-serve taquerias, like Tacos Nietos farther down 95th Street. Chains like White Castle and Domino's Pizza round out the options.Crime and noise in Jeffrey Manor
Jeffrey Manor can be noisy on a daily basis because of nearby industrial activity and traffic on roads like 95th Street and Stony Island Avenue. The neighborhood's CAP Index overall crime score is 5/10 compared to the national average of 4, with a 9/10 for homicide and an 8/10 for assault with a weapon.
