Kenwood

The vintage architecture of Kenwood
Historic houses built by renowned architects can be found with a simple stroll around the neighborhood, including distinct Prairie constructions and Colonial Revival manors. Many residents live in homes that follow these styles, as they were the forerunners for the architectural brilliance of Kenwood. "The history of the houses there is truly stunning,” says Davis. “There's fabulous old homes and modern tossed in, the structures lend to flexibility.” The neighborhood is filled with vintage greystones and Queen Anne-inspired mansions next door with Chicago brownstones and condos. Antiquated properties that have been rehabbed or meticulously maintained will be pricier, often starting around $400,000 and reach $1 million, with some crossing the $2 million mark. However, condo space varies in Kenwood, so lower prices are available depending on lake proximity and the general size of the building. Plenty of stunning Chicago brick flats run the lower end of the median pricing. Lot sizes in Kenwood are also some of the largest within Chicago, so many residents enjoy expansive yards and green space surrounding their homes. The shores of Lake Michigan at The Point
Kenwood Community Park is ideal for residents to run around on the sports fields or volley back and forth on the tennis courts. The park has a playground with a water spray area, and residents tend to the community garden. Kenwood is also home to stunning Promontory Point, a manufactured peninsula of Lake Michigan located within Burnham Park. The park also features the Chicago Lakefront Trail, several museums and a skatepark.Big-name essentials and the local shops of 53rd Street
Since much of Kenwood is occupied by residential space, locals are delighted that nearby big-name stores have opened to the south of the neighborhood, such as Target and Whole Foods Market. Walking the blocks between East Hyde Park Boulevard and East 53rd Street reveals fitness centers, banks, and restaurants. Carver 47 Food and Wellness Market has locally sourced ingredients for their sandwiches and sweets, and the space is bursting with art and plants.Visiting the iconic Hyde Park Art Center
Kenwood Park hosts day camps and seasonal sports leagues, as well as season-themed events such as pumpkin picking and Movies in the Park. Only a few streets from Kenwood Park is the Hyde Park Art Center, Chicago's oldest alternative exhibition space. The center highlights exhibits from emerging or unrecognized artists in Chicago, with works constantly on rotation. The center also hosts poetry readings, musical performances and art discussions.Getting schooled with the Chicago Public system
Students can begin at William H. Ray Elementary, with a B-minus on Niche, for pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. With an A-minus, Kenwood Academy High School offers Advanced Placement as well as clubs and activities to keep students involved. There are also private options, such as the Ancona School, which receives an A-plus from Niche and teaches pre-K through eighth grade. The Ancona School uses the Montessori tradition to teach students.Commuting from 47th Street Station
The neighborhood is bordered by Route 41, which follows the lake coast and reaches downtown Chicago 5 miles north. Residents can hop on the Metra Electric Line at the 47th Street Kenwood station, which connects to several major parts of the city.
