Iconic views of both scenic skyscrapers and sunsets over the open water of Lake Michigan are enjoyed by residents of the New East Side neighborhood. Locals of New East Side have access to an abundance of amenities that come with living in downtown Chicago, as well as the opportunity to enjoy fresh air from the waterfront. With many large employers in the neighborhood such as MTM Inc and Blue Cross Blue Shield, most residents are within walking distance of their office. “You’re right there in the city, and there’s fantastic views up and down the lakefront. It’s all big developments and large-scale buildings,” says Real Estate Broker Scott Berg with Berg Properties, who has over 20 years of experience.
Restaurants around New East Side
Most of New East Side is made up of local and chain restaurant options that sit at the bottom of high-rise skyscrapers. “There are local coffee shops and restaurants here and there, but it’s a bit of a walk to get anywhere else,” Berg says. Brown Bag Seafood Co serves its patrons fresh seafood dishes, including crispy cod tacos and salmon power boxes. Grab a meal to go or relax on their patio with a house-made cocktail. For an upscale dinner experience, make a reservation at Avli on the Park and enjoy their authentic Greek cuisine with dishes like brizola, lamb chops and pasta. Residents of New East Side enjoy coffee shops such as Dunkin’ and Starbucks within the neighborhood’s borders, as well as the convenience of a CVS on North Columbus Drive. Locals can do their grocery shopping at Mariano’s, or right outside the neighborhood’s borders at the local Whole Foods Market or Jewel-Osco.

Luxury condos with amenities
New East Side residents can occupy one of the neighborhood’s several condo or apartment complexes scattered between the commercial high-rises of the area. These units can range from $500,000 to $950,000, depending on the square footage and number of bedrooms. Cirrus is an exclusive resort-style condominium that comes with additional amenities and prices its units around $1.2 to $3.5 million. Residents in the upper levels can enjoy a lakefront view. “It’s a different style of living over there, compared to the rest of downtown Chicago,” Berg says.

City parks, river trails and lake access
For a downtown area, New East Side has a plethora of green spaces. Lakeshore East Park, occupying the center of the neighborhood, features an open grassy field, brick walkways, a playground and an off-leash dog park. Take a stroll along the botanical gardens and admire the flower beds and fountains. Additionally, residents have easy access to the Chicago Riverwalk, a one-and-a-quarter-mile paved path that runs along the Chicago River, and the numerous parks and green spaces that border it. Adjacent to the start of the Riverwalk, DuSable Harbor has dock spaces and boat launches for watercraft owners to use and get out onto Lake Michigan.

Most of the neighborhood is entirely walkable, with pedestrian-friendly streets that let residents walk from their condos and places of business to the restaurants nearby. Additionally, commuters can walk to the Chicago Loop from the New East Side. If people need public transportation to travel far, there are bus stations all along Columbus Drive and East Randolph Street. Only half a mile away, the Millenium Metra Train Station can connect people to the Metra Electric and SouthWest Service lines. Those who happen to use their personal vehicles have easy access to US Route 41 from the neighborhood.
