Chicago bungalows sit in rows along the city blocks in North Mayfair. “This is a historic bungalow district in Chicago, and I would say 90-95% of homes fall into that category,” says Alexandra Burki, a Broker at @properties who has lived in North Mayfair for over 12 years. “There are lots of multigenerational families in this neighborhood. Kids grow up and live on the next block. People don’t move all that often. They come here, and they stay here for a long time.” Townhouses and brick ranchers are common in this neighborhood, and most homes were built around 1925. Music festivals and area culture
North Mayfair is a culturally diverse neighborhood. Chicago’s Irish American Heritage Center, two blocks south, hosts book clubs, live folk music at its theater and food at the 5th Province Pub. There are three masjids within four blocks along Elston and Lawrence Avenue. The Salvation Army Mayfair Community Church holds services and offers community support at the neighborhood’s northeast corner. Lollapalooza is perhaps the biggest event in the region with an annual music festival in a four-day event. In 2024, there are over 170 artists performing live. Mayfair Fest is a fall festival with games, live music, entertainment and food trucks in Mayfair Park. The Chicago Blues Festival is another event that highlights the city's music history.
Gompers Park and LaBagh Woods
Residents can cast a fishing line at Gompers Lagoon and Wetland, a 6-acre park with a lagoon home to wildlife, like migrating birds in the neighborhood’s northeast corner on Carmen Avenue. Those looking to get active can work on their serve at the Gompers Park Tennis Courts or shoot threes at the basketball court. Families can take a trip to the North Mayfair Playlot Park, to have picnic by a shady playground.
Gompers Park has an outdoor pool, a large playground, sports fields and walking trails on the north side of Foster Avenue. Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the 20 miles of paved and unpaved trails for hiking and biking at LaBagh Woods, a nature preserve about a mile north that connects to Gompers Park. “We enjoy having that close by. You can literally walk across Foster Avenue, hop onto the trail and not even feel like you’re in the city,” says Burki.

Language program at Palmer Elementary
Kids can attend Palmer Elementary School, which has an overall Niche grade of B, it and offers a bilingual program with 23 languages, including Arabic and Spanish. ASPIRA Charter – Haugan Campus has an overall grade of C-minus, and students can begin taking programs and submitting art to the All-City Performing and Visual Arts exhibits. Theodore Roosevelt High School has a C-plus overall grade, and students can take classes like game design through the school’s Career and Technical Education programs.

Take the train or walk

The nearest Metra Station is one mile south on Montrose Avenue for commuters to get around Chicago. The Chicago O'Hare International Airport is only eight miles west of North Mayfair. Downtown Chicago is 11 miles southeast on Interstate 90. The neighborhood has access to Interstate 94 going north, and roads like Elston Avenue can take residents throughout the city without even getting on the interstate.
