Craftsman bungalows with workers cottage traits
Much of the community is residential, with houses closely arranged along tree-line roads. The trees in certain areas of Roseland can almost form natural tunnels, providing ample shade to the streets below. Among the most common homes here are Craftsman bungalows with the distinct workers cottage traits commonly seen across Chicago. Workers cottages stand out with features like off-centered doors and stairways. While some of the renovations are starting to raise prices, Roseland is still viewed as one of the more affordable neighborhoods in the city. Price points for many of these cottage homes that can go back to the early 1900s can from under $150,000 for less than 1,000 square feet to nearly $300,000 for one that’s over 2,500 square feet. There are also some two- and three-flat buildings that can run between $200,000 and $300,000.Several neighborhood parks and close to Harborside golf center
Parks and recreational amenities exist on almost every side of Roseland, as well as in nearby Pullman. On the northern end is the 25-acre Abbott Park, where teens and children can take advantage of a multi-purpose room and game room. The park also draws young athletes to its multiple outdoor sports amenities, which include several baseball diamonds and basketball courts. Another spacious green space and recreational site exists on the opposite end of Roseland, the roughly 38-acre Palmer Park, which boasts similar amenities to Abbott. However, one of the biggest sports destinations in this part of the city lies just east of Roseland. Players can get some rounds in at the public Harborside International Golf Center, which has two 18-hole courses spread out across rugged fairways located right along the prominent Lake Calumet.Schools
The several schools that exist in the neighborhood include Langston Hughes Elementary School, the Harlan Community Academy and Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy, which respectfully received grades of C-minus, C-minus and A from ratings site Niche. Langston Hughes serves pre-kindergarten through eighth grade, while Gwendolyn Brooks serves seventh through 12th grades. Both a Niche Standout high school and among the top 10 best magnet high schools in the state, Gwendolyn Brooks has been ranked highly by other publications that include both the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune. For spring break, the students are known to go abroad to countries that like France, Morocco and Switzerland. Roseland is also home to the predominantly Black institution, Chicago State University.Celebrations in nearby Pullman

There are also several CTA bus stops in the neighborhood. More popular community staples exist a little farther south along Michigan Avenue. Those looking to start their day with some coffee and sweet pastries can walk through the vintage glass storefront of Old Fashioned Donuts, which celebrated its 50th anniversary during the fall of 2022. A Food4Less exists at the 87th Street Center just north of Roseland. Shoppers will find an ALDI a little farther north.Important Roseland community facts
